Is it possible to export PPT slides with animations as layered PSD
files so that you can recreate the animations in FCP - essentially
fading up lines of text or graphics  that appeared as animations in
the PPT presentation?

Hi,

You can use File > Save As > PowerPoint movie to save a presentation as a
QuickTime movie.  Since it is .mov you should be able to import that into
FCP, iMovie, and iDVD. I doubt it will be layered, however. If it is, please
let us know.

Thanks

Hi Robin -

Although I've never tried, my familiarity with PPt & Photoshop leads me
toward a definite No. For certain, PPt can't save in .psd format. Further,
PPt animations are primarily vector & Photoshop is a *raster* image editor.
If you attempt to open a vector file file with PS it has to be rasterized,
but in a brief look, PS will not recognize a .ppt for either Opening or
Placing - animation of not.

Whether Jim's suggestion will work or not I have no idea - sounds possible,
but it's certain that the file would have to be in some other format in
order for it to have the proverbial "snowball's chance". You might also try
saving the .ppt as TIFF, which can be layered. Whether PPt supports layered
tiff, however, I'm not sure. I tend to doubt it but haven't had reason to
test that capability.

There may also be some newer capability if you're using PS CS3 Extended
which has advanced 3d & Motion features not available in other versions, but
you might do well to check out the Adobe Forums for a better indication of
what can be done before going the bite for the upgrade.
