Changing Ruler Size in Handout Master View

Hello.

I've come across a very frustrating incongruity with the size of the
rule
bar at the top of the PowerPoint screen when viewing the Handout
Master
page for some files.

As background, I produce slide shows for a company that stages medical
lectures. Much of the material we begin with is submitted by
physicians,
and a big part of my job is cleaning up this material to match our
standard corporate format (e.g., uniform background color, uniform
font
and font sizes, standardized look).

In addition to the live slide show projection, we also create a
printed
syllabus to match the presentation. These hard copy printouts include
our
corporate logo and note lines, all of which are easy to set up on the
Handout Master page in PowerPoint. All of this is very
straightforward.

I've noticed, however, on a handful of PowerPoint files, the dimension
of
the page shown in the Handout Master view is much smaller than in
other
files. Normally, if I pull down the View menu and select Master/
Handout
Master, the rule bar at the top of the page shows 4" on both the right
and
the left of the zero mark; a total of 8". But sometimes when I open
the
Handout Master view to insert our logo into the header for a 4-up or 3-
up
printout, the ruler bar shows only 1" to each side of the zero mark.
If I
copy our corporate logo and note lines format from a normal Handout
Master
page and try to paste this onto the page for one of these smaller page
files, the logo appears MUCH LARGER, and other pasted elements move
completely off the page.

I've checked the page setup to no avail. I can configure the size of
the SLIDE size there, but not the size of the handouts.

I've grappled with this issue for a year now, asking just about
everybody
I know who works with PowerPoint files. Most people have never even
noticed this issue, and nobody knows how to solve it. I can't find any
information about this on line.

Suggestions?

I've seen it a time or two but haven't been able to work out what causes it
(it's been in files that've been passed around a bit, probably through several
versions of PPT if not also cross-platform hops).

Luckily, I had the wit to document the fix; it's all from a Win/PC perspective,
but the HTML version of it may work for you as well.

Notes pages are odd-sized
