Powerpoint Just Disappears

I'm running Office 2004 on an iMac 24" Intel machine.  While working
on PowerPoint, the program just disappears from my desktop.  There is
no crash message, no nothing.  There is a recovery file written to my
hard drive and I can recover most of the work I had done, but then, a
short while, it will do the same thing.  It continues to do this
throughout my PowerPoint session.

When other programs crash, I always get the crash dialog were is asks
you to either reopen, send, or close.  However, with Powerpoint, I get
nothing at all.

I've deleted the preference files, but it makes no difference.  Does
anyone out there have any suggestions?

Hi,

This sounds like an old problem that was fixed in an update.

From the PowerPoint Help menu use Check For Updates to make sure you have
all of the updates installed.

From the PowerPoint main menu choose About PowerPoint. You should see
PowerPoint version 11.3.2 (061207) if your copy is up to date.

Thank-you for the response.  However, I did update the software and it
was working fine for a while.  After about 3 hours of solid work, the
behavior resumed.  PowerPoint just disappears from the desktop.  The
program closes without warning and no error messages are presented.

Hi,

In that case I think it's time to break out DiskWarrior and let it have a go
at your hard drive and see if there are some problems that need to be fixed.

Well, I've installed all updates to Office, I've deleted preference
files, and I've run DiskWarrior.  DiskWarrior did find some errors and
fixed them, but the problem of PowerPoint just disappearing remains.
The only step I've not done is to completely remove Office and
reinstall.

However, if anyone has any other suggestions, I'm listening.

Hi,

Since installing Office isn't too onerous (probably waiting for updates to
download is the biggest drawback) I'd give the remove office and install
fresh a try.

The Remove Office utility is in Applications > Microsoft Office 2004 >
Additional Tools > Remove Office folder. Double click the Remove Office
utility.

I would restart the computer after running the utility, and then empty the
trash.

The utility will keep your documents, email, calendar events, etc.

Thanks for the reply, Jim.  Well, I've done the Remove Office utility,
reinstalled Office, reupdated Office and the problem is the same.
Now, at least, I've been seeing the crash report pop up (the one that
asks you to send to Apple).  So, I have a crash report and a crash log
- though I cannot understand what they are telling me.  Is there
anything else I can try?
