Hyperlinks just 'stopped' working

cazdarell - 19 Jul 2006 02:22 GMT I have seen similar messages to the problem that I have now, but wonder if anyone can help my specific problem.
I have a 'Jeopardy-style' quiz that utilises hyperlinks to get to specific slides - and back to the front or last page again. It would have less than 30 hyperlinks in it. There is also a hyperlink from another presentation that calls the quiz.
It has been working perfectly well for me for years (although mostly on a PC). I just went to use it on a Mac and it was working fine. But after editing and saving, the hyperlinks don't work any more.
I re-created them, resaved and thought they were OK - but when I went back into the presentation they were gone again.
Is there a work-around to stop this happening. I need to be able to use this quiz reliably.
Thanks

[quoted text clipped - 15 lines] > > Thanks estuardoa@gmail.com - 27 Jul 2006 04:24 GMT Hyperlinks stopped working on a presentation shortly after the latest update 11.2.5. After verifying permissions and many other attempts I uninstalled and re-installed Office. The hyperlinks worked again. After installing the update they again stopped working. I have re-installed Office and NOT the update, hyperlinks are working again. The question now is what updates to install and Word, Excel and Powerpoint all launch with a warning that the Framework Library failed to load. Anybody have any ideas about that problem? Entourage wont open at all. It says "This identity cannot be opened with this version of Entourage"
Nonplused
> Cazdarell > [quoted text clipped - 29 lines] > > > > Thanks Christopher MacLeod - 30 Jul 2006 21:43 GMT My experience is quite similar to that of "Nonplused." My loss of hyperlinks occurred directly after the 11.2.5 update; I reinstalled PowePoint 2004 (not all of Office) and was warned that the Framework Library had failed to load. I then updated Office again. Hyperlinks still are not working from any existing presentation. One presentation in which I remade the hyperlinks does work; another does not.
Very frustrating! Creating these presentations is part of what I do for my living, and I vastly prefer working with my Mac to working on the PC at the office.
Help would be appreciated.

Can you please provide a little more information such as the exact build of Office you're running and some steps so that we can reproduce the problem? For the first part, please provide the version and build # you see under PowerPoint > About PowerPoint. Also, go to your Microsoft Office 2004/Office folder, do a Command-I on the Microsoft Office file and report the version and build # listed there.
As for steps, I'm looking for something like: 1. Start PowerPoint 2. Create n slides 3. Slide Show > Action Buttons > _____, draw a box 4. Hyperlink to: > Slide... ... 8. Start slide show 9. Click on link/action button/etc. etc.
Result: ??? (nothing happens, error "____" comes up, etc.)
Also, do you have >1 monitor and if so, is one running in presenter view? Is your machine an Intel based Mac? If so, which model?
Thanks, Andrew

My loss of > hyperlinks [quoted text clipped - 63 lines] >>>> >>>> Thanks Christopher MacLeod - 01 Aug 2006 04:19 GMT Thanks for your response, Andrew. I work with a PowerBook G4. My Office 2004 build is 11.2.5. PowerPoint 2004 is listed as 11.2.4.
The steps you list are approximately what I do. After creating the slides, I then create the hyperlinks, sometimes by going Slide Show > Action Settings
> Mouse Click > Hyperlink to > slide . . . Other times, I use <CMD>-K to insert a hyperlink to another slide. (This latter is my preferred method.)
For a while, my hyperlinks worked perfectly, but since updating Office to 11.25, I've had troubles. In slide shows containing hyperlinks -- whether they are stored on my hard drive or whether I download them from my web site -- the hyperlinks are gone. The only links that work are those action buttons directing the user to the next slide.
This behavior occurs only on my computer. That is, if I download a show from the web site to my Windows computer at the office, the hyperlinks are there and work properly.
I have rebuilt hyperlinks on two of my slide shows, and their behaviors differ. One of the shows works. Why, I don't know. I've tried sabotaging it by uploading it to my web site, downloading it to my Windows computer, making changes in Office 2003 and uploading it again and then downloading it back to my Mac. Works fine.
Another show is a different story. I've rebuilt the hyperlinks and tested them out. They work fine. But if I quit PowerPoint, then restart it the hyperlinks are gone.
FWIW, the slide shows I'm talking about can be found as follows:
The show that seems to work is at . . . http://www.nhhistory.org/edu/support/slides/nheyespeople.ppt
The show that keeps losing its hyperlinks is at http://www.nhhistory.org/edu/support/slides/nhwentworths.ppt
Again, thank you very much for responding.

For example, in slide show view, when you hover over something that's supposed to be linked, does the cursor change to indicate this?
If you look at the specific path or address of the link, what varies between the shows that work and those that don't? The two macros here will help with that:

Andrew Chiang [MSFT] - 01 Aug 2006 21:39 GMT Hello Christopher,
Thanks for the info. We'll take a look into it.
For our information, what OS version are you running (as reported by Apple menu > About This Mac)? Also, since you're running on a PowerBook G4, do you have an active external monitor/projector attached when running slide show?
Thanks, Andrew

My Office > 2004 [quoted text clipped - 75 lines] >> Thanks, >> Andrew Christopher MacLeod - 02 Aug 2006 04:01 GMT Again, thanks, Andrew. I'm running OS 10.4.7. FWIW, I tend to check and install updates as available on a regular weekly schedule -- both Apple's and Microsoft's updates. (I also run MacJanitor regularly and repair permissions using Disk Utility.) I do not use an external monitor or projector, though I have connected to a projector in the past.
And to piggy-back responses, re Steve Rindsberg's inquiry: the hyperlinks are gone, as if I never made them. And all the hyperlinks are internal, to other slides in the same show, not to other files, the exception being the "mailto" link that appears on my end slide. This link, too, disappears.

We use hyperlinks in our company's credentials so we can jump from client to client in any order we wish. We run Mac's, all 10.4.7 and last week ran Microsoft updates and are currently running PowerPoint 2004 11.2.4 (060501). Sometimes we use a large LCD but mainly preople use a 17inch Powerbook to present from, I use a G5 tower to build the presentations on. Since we ran the update, none of the hyperlinks work and we are deep in it. When you move the point over a link, you see the hand and when you click nothing happens. When you go to the action settings, the hyperlink to option says slide one, which is incorrect and doesn't even work. No warning message, nothing.
Now we currently have one laptop that was not updated so we have a temporary solution (it will have to shared between 6 people until we fix) but we need to find a solution to this as we will need to re-think how we present our credentials and that means a whole lot of work for me.
Any ideas of who to fix this?
Andy
Christopher MacLeod - 02 Aug 2006 13:01 GMT Hi, Andrew,
Just an added wrinkle: I downloaded one of my PowerPoint files that uses hyperlinks to my wife's iBook (OS 10.4.7) which had Office 2004 11.0. The hyperlinks worked perfectly. Then I updated her Office to 11.2.5 and restarted PowerPoint. The hyperlinks were gone.
Also, let me amend my response to Steve Rindsberg's inquiry. When I pass my cursor over the supposedly hyperlinked hotspot, the cursor does change as if the spot is linked, but nothing happens on a mouse click. The "Action Settings" window will suggest that the spot is linked to slide no. 1 -- but it's not true.

It'll pull up whatever PPT *thinks* the link points to. Copy/paste that into your reply here. That might be helpful in sorting this out.
Or maybe more useful:
Where are the hyperlinks? http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00632.htm
If you run this from the VB editor with the Immediate Window visible, you'll then be able to copy/paste the results for the whole presentation back into your reply.

Christopher MacLeod - 02 Aug 2006 23:33 GMT Thanks for responding, Steve. Unfortunately, you're dealing with my limitations. I tried following your link below, but found directions to be seemingly Windows-oriented (e.g., when I go to Tools > Macros, there is no choice listed for security levels.) Creating then running the macro yielded no visible results. The link you sent earlier seemed to steer me to an "exe" file, which I declined to download because it was identified as a Windows application file.
I'll be happy to follow your advice if you don't mind doing a bit of hand-holding.

Creating then running the macro yielded > no visible results. Thanks for coming back on this. It's hard to know how much people already know about running VBA. That macro sends output to the "Immediate" window ... a kind of debugging tool. To see any output, you need to make it visible; in the VBA editor, press Cloverleaf-G or choose View, Immediate to show it.
Then try running the macro.
If nothing happens or if you get a warning messages about macros in the presentation, try disabling the "Macro Virus Protection" option on the General tab of the PowerPoint, Preferences dialog.
> The link you sent earlier seemed to steer me to an "exe" > file, which I declined to download because it was identified as a Windows > application file. There was also some VBA code on that same page; that should have run ok on the Mac as well ... sorry for the EXE confusion.

Christopher MacLeod - 03 Aug 2006 13:48 GMT Thanks, Steve,
Here are the results from the "Immediate" window. The first is from "nheyespeople" (55 slides), which at first lost all its links, but when I remade it, it worked and continues to work. The second list is from "nhwentworths" (23 slides), in which links don't work and in which even if I remake the links, they cease to work once I quit and restart PowerPoint. Again, thanks for your help.

Christopher MacLeod - 03 Aug 2006 20:51 GMT Au contraire, Steve -- thank you for your patience with me!
Below ae the results you asked for. Again, I've included information from two files, the working one (nheyes) and one of the non-working ones (nhwentworth). I should point out that none of my other PowerPoint files with links to other slides works either. Also, FWIW, I tried running shows from a CD-ROM created (on my Mac) before the troubles began. Links did not work. When looked at via "Insert Hyperlink" there was nothing there; when looked at via "Action Settings," they were invariably linked to Slide 1. Files from the same CD-ROM run on my Windows computer perfectly and the links show properly.

I'm trying to repro this problem but am not able to. For those of you who are having this problem, where were the files originally created? Were they created in 11.2.4? Or were they originally Windows files or earlier versions of Mac PowerPoint?
Also, are people just having problems with hyperlinks that go to different slides or are you having problems going to URLs as well?
This would really help me in trying to repro this hyperlink problem.
Thanks! Nancy Cho
Christopher MacLeod - 04 Aug 2006 02:24 GMT Hi, Nancy,
Thanks for working on my problem -- ours, I guess, because I get the sense I'm far from alone.
All my PowerPoint files are made on a Mac and all were made in PowerPoint 2004 before the most recent Microsoft update -- Office 11.2.5.
My hyperlinks are all to other slides except for one (in each file) that is a "mailto:" link.

Originally my PowerpOint files were created on 11.2.4 but since then I have ran tests and the problems happens when I created a brand new presentation on 11.2.5. Like the the others, starts off fine, save and close, open it again and all the links don't work and when I check it says it's pointing to slide 1. Other information that might me useful:- I use Mac's running 10.4.7 and Office 2004.
Other tests I ran was with an un-updated copy, I chopped down the presentation to see if the lenght/size was a factor as other have mentioned a limit of 64k for hyperlinks and when I opened it in 11.2.5 they were corrupted. I even copied slides from one presentation to another to see if that made a difference but it didn't.
I hope this helps.

Christopher MacLeod - 04 Aug 2006 20:43 GMT Hi, Nancy,
Here's a follow-up to my last response. Actually, one of my files does have hyperlinks to URLs as well as to other slides and these URL links don't work either.
New twist: I also have Office 2001 for occasional use in the Classic environment. I never use it, but I thought I'd try it with my "failed" files. The links work in PowerPoint 2001 on my machine.
Also, would it help if you received one of my "contaminated" files to investigate? The reason I mention this is that once the file is contaminated, it won't work on my Windows machine's Office 2003 either.
If it would be useful, I could put a file with non-working links onto my file-sharing page on the Web. This file could then be compared with a version that works, which is located elsewhere.

Christopher MacLeod - 05 Aug 2006 03:46 GMT Thanks, Steve. I appreciate your continuing interest.
From my own Mac, any files I work with are contaminated files. I can only point you to files I know have not been on my machine since PowerPoint began misbehaving.
http://homepage.mac.com/cdmacleod Here you will find "nheyespeople," in which the hyperlinks work -- I don't know why. They don't in any other PowerPoint file. "nhwentworths" is such a file.
http://www.nhhistory.org/edu/support/slidesindex.htm This page contains links to my various slide files, all of which work -- on my Windows computer at work, that is. "The Wentworth Governors: A New Hampshire Dynasty" is the working version of "nhwentworths."

Nancy Cho - 08 Aug 2006 18:52 GMT Hi Christopher, thanks for the files to try out. just to make sure I understand...the second link is to files that "corrupt" when opened in 11.2.5? But work fine in Windows PowerPoint 2003?
I want to make sure to make copies before they "corrupt". I still have not been able to repro the problem (that is, create the file in 11.2.4 and open in 11.2.5 - the links work fine). Am I missing a step? Do I need to edit the links in order to lose the links?
Thanks again, Nancy

Nancy Cho - 08 Aug 2006 19:23 GMT Hi Christopher, could you let me know which files are the ones that have links that don't work? I was downloading a bunch but didn't know which work and which don't.
Or, if you could just email me some (that work in 11.2.4 but don't work in 11.2.5)...that would be great.
thanks, Nancy

Just to make sure I'm clear: with the latest update -- Office 11.2.5 -- PowerPoint is listed as 11.2.4. So I will always refer to events as pre- or post-11.2.5.
http://homepage.mac.com/cdmacleod This page contains the four files with hyperlinks. All were created on my Mac pre-11.2.5.
None of the hyperlinks will work now -- except for "nheyespeople." Why it works I do not know.
If a file doesn't work on my Mac, it also will not work if I port it to my Windows machine at work.
Thanks,
Chris

Matt - 10 Aug 2006 19:46 GMT I too have the exact same problem. Hyperlinks to other slides can be entered...but not saved. I make my living giving interactive lectures, and this glitch is quite frustrating. I don't mind going back to an earlier version of office if needed, but have a couple of quick questions.
1. Will the hyperlinks automatically work in the older version, or will they need to be "reattached?"
2. I updated to the latest version in order to avoid the "malicious" hacking vulnerabilities. Is there a risk if I downgrade??
Thanks
Matt

Nancy Cho - 10 Aug 2006 21:03 GMT Well, from what I gather from other people, as long as you don't do any saving in 11.2.5, opening it in 11.2.4 again should still retain the links. However, if you have saved in 11.2.5, then you need to reattach the links.
To everyone else, I'm still working on this...thank you all for your patience (and your files)!

I'm finally able to repro the problem! I will report the bug. Thank you all for your help and for the files. Hopefully we'll get something done for it.
Thanks again, Nancy
Christopher MacLeod - 11 Aug 2006 00:51 GMT Hooray, Nancy! Thanks for your efforts -- as well as those of others who worked on the problem. I hope the solution comes soon.

To answer your questions:
My Powerpoint file was create with Powerpoint 11.2.4 (office 11.2.5). This was created on my mac.
I am linking to an external file (.swf format) that is located in the same folder as the PPT file. The external file is from a colleague, an I am not certain if he created it on a mac or windows machine.
I will try creating links to other slides and URLs and see if this reproduces. Will report back shortly.
Hope this helps.

To follow-up my last response:
1) I created a new ppt file and created a hyperlink (using ACTION SETTINGS) to the next slide. Worked fine, and functionaility seems to be retained after closing and re-opening.
2) Did the same with link pointing to a web url. Worked fine and also survived closing, opening, etc!
3) Created a new version of my original ppt file with a link to the same external file and the problem repeated itself!
4) Created a new version of my original ppt file with a link to a DIFFERENT external file (also located in same folder) and is working fine!
5) Redirected my original link to the other external file that did work (in #4), and the problem continues.

Nancy Cho - 08 Aug 2006 19:29 GMT Hi PL, I work for microsoft (tester for PowerPoint for Mac) and am looking into the problem.
Actually, if you and sjohnson and other people who have files that work in 11.2.4 but not in 11.2.5 could email me the files...that would be great. I have tried to recreate the problem but cannot repro it. If I have the original files in 11.2.4 (so I can see they work in 11.2.4), hopefully I can get it to repro in 11.2.5 and get somewhere with this problem.
Please email it to nancychomsft@gmail.com.
The more files I get that exhibit this problem, the better I will be able to narrow down the problem (hopefully!)
Thanks, Nancy

I am using a few files that were created on Office 2003 for Windows. While using Office for Mac 11.2.4 the links worked; in 11.2.5 they didn't. No other changes. Reverting to 11.2.4 (which wasn't easy!) the links in all files SAVED under 11.2.5 were bad in 11.2.4. Pulling the same file from my pre-11.2.5 update, the links are all working. All links in my presentations go to slides.
I helped another friend through this yesterday. His links went to other slides, other presentations, and to URLs. We're both using Powerbook G4s with Mac OS 11.4.7.

Looks like PowerPoint thinks the links are there (or the macro wouldn't display them) but with both the Address and Subaddress blank, they're links to the deep end of the Ozone. Nowhere.
And yet they work in the Windows version. Hmmm.
Over to you, Nancy ...
Could there be an issue with a null character or some other "line terminator" confusing things?

estuardoa@gmail.com - 02 Aug 2006 16:58 GMT So the symptoms are consistent among many users: install update 11.2.5 and hyperlinks stop working, they still exist and say that they point to slide 1 but they do not work- for slide 1 or otherwise. However, if one shares the presentation that does not work in the Mac with a PC users the hyperlinks are still there and functional. There is a glitch on the update.
I reinstalled Office 2004 and updated to just prior to 11.2.5 and the hyperlinks work, although not on the "corrupted" files.
However, after re-installing Office now all its components launch with a warning that the Framework Library failed to load, and Entourage wont open at all. It says "This identity cannot be opened with this version of Entourage" Can you help?
