I cannot open any *.ppt files that I created in my office on a PC with
MS PPT 2000 on my iMac at home (well, I know that it is a shame to use
a PC, but so far I have not been successful in convincing my employer
to switch systems). On the mac I use MS Office 2004 (11.1.1) running on
MacOS 10.4.2 (Tiger). Does anybody out there have an idea how I can fix
this problem. Thanks for your help

How are you transporting the files?

Are you trying to open directly from removable media or copying to HD
first?

Are you attempting to open by double-clicking the file icon or through
PPt File>Open?

What _exactly_ happens when you try either of the above?

I did try both ways, opening directly from memory stick and first
copying the file the hardrive, that is. The result was always the same.
I also tried to first start up PowerPoint and open the file from the
application rather than just double-clicking the file. At first the
file seems to open just fine but then only a white window is displayed
and the revolving colour rosetta that indicates that the process is
still running does not disappear. Then I have to kill the application
by means of the "end immediately" command (it may have a different name
on an English OS, but you know what I mean I believe). When using this
command another application that does not respond appears in the list
of running processes: the MS error handler, which itself is not able to
start up and has to be killed the hard way as well.
When I move the "end immediately" processes list window or any other
window over the stalled PPT presentation the first slide does appear
but the program is still hooked up. The moving window acts like an
"unhiding brush".
I know that this sounds weird but it really is what I observe.
Cheers,
Urs

Hello Hector,

Can you provide me more information?  I'd like to know:
- the version of PowerPoint
- what OS you're running on
- a rough idea of what's in the presentation when you hit the issue
- Can you repro the problem w/an empty or one slide presentation?
- How are you saving? File->Save?  Save button in the toolbar?  Command-S?
Some other method?
- Are you running any anti-virus applications such as Norton AntiVirus?  If
yes, is auto-protect enabled?  If yes, can you repro the problem if
auto-protect is turned off?

Thanks,
Andrew
