Thanks.
I now realise that the best way to achieve what I need is to just copy one
slide (rather than the whole presentation) and create a new presentation
rather than doing a 'Save As'. That way only the sound associated with that
slide gets copied to the new presentation.
I can get away with this because just about all the slides in the
presentation use the same format / sequence / animations etc. - only the
text and the sounds are different from slide to slide. However, if that were
not the case and I had needed to do a 'Save As' to create a new
presentation, then all the sounds that I had recorded for the original
presentation would still be there, so the 'new' presentation would be almost
twice the size as the original! My query is, how would I get rid of them?
Where are they stored?

To the best of my knowledge the embedded sounds are essentially
"attached" to the slide in the presentation file. There should be a
small Speaker icon on the slide that represents the sound. It may be
covered by something else, such as a picture or other graphic object.
If you have trouble finding it use Cmd+a (select all), which should
make it easier to find. Once you locate the icon, select it and press
Delete. As I understand it, that should be the only thing necessary to
remove an embedded sound.
