I've got an Apple Powerbook 3400c with 144 megs of RAM, and I'm
running Mac OS 8.6.  It starts up fine, but when it gets to the
desktop, the icons start flashing several times for about 10 seconds
then it freezes.  If I boot it up with the extensions off, it just
freezes when it gets to the desktop.  I can boot it up with the MAC OS
Disk, but then it just freezes up as well.  Anyone have any
suggestions, other than taking it in to a service center for repair?

try removing the ram and see how well that works. also try to boot off
an external hard drive (ideally from a brand new clean install) and
remove the internal cd when booting. i suspect neither is going to fare
any better, but its worth a shot just to rule out a few possibilities.

its probably not worth repairing since you can probably buy another
used one that works for less than the cost of the repair (particularly
if they have to replace the motherboard).

How is the PRAM battery holding up?
