I have LED backlighting on my MacBook Pro (bought in June 2007), which I
got after upgrading from a Titanium PowerBook G4.
It is a huge improvement: much brighter screen (potentially too bright -
I often have it turned down from the brightest setting). The screen gets
to full brightness immediately, rather than having to warm up for a
little while, and it doesn't deteriorate with age.

What rumours would these be?
The 15" MacBook Pros had LED backlit displays starting with the previous
generation, released in June 2007 (which is one of the reasons I bought
that model). You're a year out.
The 17" model only got it in the latest model (February 2008) and then
only if you pay for the higher resolution screen.
The MacBook Air (13") also has backlighting, but it hasn't turned up on
the basic MacBook yet (too expensive), nor on the iMac or Cinema
displays (way too expensive).
> LEDs are expensive, expect a price increase.
You should do some better research. The 15" MacBook Pro price didn't
change when LED backlighting was introduced.

getting my rumors from the official rumor sites.<g>

Oh goody, maybe my "Santa Rosa" 15-inch MacBook Pro has
the LED backlighting then, I bought it after June 2007.
Any way to determine if it has LED backlighting for the screen?

Compare it visually to any other Mac laptop of similar age, with both
turned up to maximum brightness, in a relatively dark room. The LED
backlight is substantially brighter.
Look at the specifications in MacTracker and confirm your laptop is a
"MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid/Late 2007)". In particular, the Model ID in
System Profiler should be "MacBookPro3,1". According to MacTracker, that
model (and the early 2008 15" one) have LED backlighting.
(Sidebar: the 17" mid/late 2007 model has the same Model ID, but doesn't
have LED backlighting. The 17" early 2008 model only has LED
backlighting if the resolution of the built-in display is 1920x1200).
I'm not aware of anything in System Profiler (for example) which
directly indicates the type of backlight.

Ahh, there it is in my 15-inchers System Profiler,
in this line -
Model Identifier: MacBookPro3,1
Odd that Apple does not make a point of advertising that feature.

I think that the fact that the brightness doesn't diminish with age is
the biggest advantage: on 2-3 year old fluorescent-backlit displays, the
brightness diminishes by a substantial amount.
