Hm, that is surprising me. You mean just pugging and unplugging and not using
any special software on the bigger display?
I never made this experience. For the moment I don't have a PowerBook here to
test only my Mac Book Pro, not showing any differences with or without my 20"
Dell. The Dell display is very comparable to the 20" CD, it uses the same
panel with 1650x1080 resolution. I will test the same later with a 15" 1,25
GHz PowerBook and post here. But already now I'm 99% sure that I never had
this on any of my Books. Also there is no physical evidence why it should heat
up so significant.

Yes. In fact, yesterday I unplugged the display with the fan going full
speed, and literally within less than a minute, the fan slowed down and
stopped. I've never had the fan cease so suddenly like that before.

Well, that's good news, and it's pretty much what I was hoping to learn
by posting my question. I've been about 90 percent sure that I'd be
buying a MacBook Pro in the near future, but I was starting to have
second thoughts, because I didn't want to have to sit and listen to that
whiny fan for hours on end while working with the Cinema Display. I need
the big display, but I really want a MacBook Pro, and I hate the glossy
iMac screens. But if I had to choose between the whiny fan and the
glossy screen, I'd choose the glossy screen and get an iMac instead.
