can't you use 2x (or more) media?  I know that I used to be able to use
40x CD's on my CD burner which only burned at 24x max.

I found a firmware flasher that ups the drive to 2x, but that's still
pretty old and impossible to find. Anyone else have success burning DVDs
in a stock Tibook?

Me? My wife has my old 1GHz TiBook, and it wrote 2x DVDs just fine. Well,
until it died one day; won't read, much less write, to any optical media.

I found a source for replacement drives, ought to fix it.

I am positive that any speed rated blank disk will work in a stock
reference (one times) design DVD burner.

I have a stock speed CD drive in a scsi case around somewhere. A CD
drive that requires a carrier for the CD. That cost a lot of money.

I can recall the discussion only vaguely, so I don't know if it could
help you. There is a utility to control the disk speed,

 <http://discrotate.sourceforge.net/>

haven't tested it myself though :)
