On my Powerbook G4 (1.67 Ghz PPC) one of the USB ports does not
recognize my mouse anymore. However, it works with a powered USB hub,
only plugged in directly, ie without an extension cord.
All this seems inexplicable...
Many thanks for help.

Open up the console window (its in the Utilities folder) and look for
any strange error messages. Start the console with the mouse unplugged,
when while you are watching the console, plug in the mouse. What
happens? Try googling for any error messages you see or do a search on
the support area of http://www.apple.com

Many thanks for your help.
When I reconnect the mouse directly, nothing happens at all in the
console. And the mouse stays unrecognized.
When I reconnect the mouse via the hub, the mouse is recognized, but
still nothing appears in the console.

USB I/O errors tend to go into the system log.  In Console, choose File
> Open System Log. Then plug in the mouse and watch for messages in the
system log.
