About three years ago I purchased three Epson Printers. One 3 in 1 and
2 Stylus 84s. The Epson 3 in 1 died about a year ago and I replaced it
with a different Epson 3 in 1. In the past couple of weeks both of the
Epson Stylus C84s have stopped working with the same problem. Both
C84s are in different offices and neither are used very much and it
seems funny they would stop working almost simultaneously but they did.
I have a StyleWriter II that I purchased in the mid 90's and it works
just great but it works only on OS 9 machines with a StyleWriter 1500
driver. I would like to purchase a couple of new printers. Can anyone
recommend a printer that would work on OS 9 and X and would last more
than three years. I do not need color. The machines will be in a
business envoirnment and color in not necessary.

Find a networkable laserprinter (or a laserprinter and a router with a
print-server in it), would be my suggestion. I picked up a used HP LJ5
for home use, and have a JetDirect interface on it. Any Mac that can
talk to a generic PostScript printer and which has ethernet can print to
the thing.
fwiw.

'indiana' is a 'nolnn' and 'hoosier' is a 'solkk'. Indiana doesn't solkk.

Jon-
I basically agree with JohnB and John J. One positive feature of a
laser printer, is that its print heads won't clog-up when sitting up for
long periods.
However, a seldom-used laser printer doesn't need to be built like a
tank. The consumer grade machine will probably last a long time as
well, and may have a smaller footprint. The main drawback is its
smaller toner cartridge(s) will end up costing more per print. A
secondary drawback may be a less-than-500 sheet paper tray. (Still
better than an ink-jet on both points!)
To be sure a laser printer is supported under OS 9, look for one that
uses PostScript and claims OS 9 support. If you choose one with
AppleTalk-over-Ethernet networking, be aware that some Ethernet
equipment does not pass AppleTalk packets.
Yes, color isn't necessary. However it is often nice to have. For
example, you can create view-graphs on a laser printer, and color makes
them better. If you have it, you will find a use for it.
There are several good brands out there, but I trust HP the most.
Supplies are available at most office supply stores, and you can obtain
service when needed.
One other thought - does the price of even an eBay laser printer exceed
your budget? You may find that the price of a new Epson every three
years is more palatable!

I got a Brother HL-2040 Laser Printer. It does everything I needed to
do. Thanks for the assistance to all.
