Extremely wide variety - from CLI apps to super GUI-fied. Depends on your
taste & use.

Unison is new kid, pretty seductive, but ultimately a v1 baby with some
issues, especially re: binaries.

MT-Newswatcher fills most needs except for posting binaries (no yEnc for
posting).

I'm partial to Hogwasher.

I've tried a lot of NNTP clients for OS X since I bought my MacBook back in
January but haven't yet been able to find one that suits my needs (I'm only
interested in text-only groups, no need for binaries). The most popular
ones are probably MacSoup and MT-newswatcher and I've tried really hard to
learn to use them and get used to them but had to give up at the end.
They're just far too confusing, irritating and butt-ugly to my liking.

There's hope though. Malcom has just released a few days ago the first
public beta of Nemo, a brand new NNTP client specifically designed for
MacOS X (as opposed to most other NNTP client under OS X which are ports of
Mac OS 7 or Linux software) with a beautiful, sraightforward to  use, iLife
style UI. It still has a lot of issues but it's worth trying and
contributing to the beta forum. You can get it here:
<http://www.malcom-mac.com/nemo/> and the forum is there:

Oh yes, and note that i'm am in no way related or affilated with Malcom. I
just think that Nemo is the first NNTP reader for MacOS X that I would
consider usable for my needs and I really hope that the remaining bugs get
fixed quickly.

And if you're going to use that why not use Thunderbird?

In my desperate quest to find a newsreader that would satisify my rather
small list of requirements, I did try thunderbird a few months ago. But
I've immdiately found a showstopper problem with it. I *think* that the
problem was that thunderbird would not let you mark a discussion thread so
that it always sticks at the top of the list. It would let you mark a
thread but doing so would only plac a small icon in front of the marked
thread. After a few hours, the thread would get lost among all the new
discussion threads making it impossible to keep track of an interesting
discusion and to quickly scan newsgroups for new posts in threads you've
marked. IIRC there is a way in thunderbird to filter the messages to only
display the marked threads but I've found it far too annoying to have to
constantly switch between All / Marked when all I needed was to have the
threads that were of interest for me stick at the top of the list.

Nemo on the other side will let you mark a thread as sticky (or whatever
it's called in Nemo). Sticky threads stick at the top of the list and are
displayed in a different color making it a breeze to follow interesting
discussions. A small detail for some probably but this "detail" means the
world to me given the way I use newsgroups.

Thanks for taking the time to elaborate. Still, $20?

Of course many think the Hog's lovers are insane for spending what we do!

Well, Nemo is only $15 and I spend more than that in coffee and beer every
week so if those $15 can really make my life easier and given than an NNTP
client is far from being easy to implement especially one with such a
well-thought interface as Nemo, I would gladly pay those $15. I'm still
waiting for it to be mostly bug-free first though.

$50 sure is a lot especially if you're not interested in binaries (which is
my case). At this price, i'd expect it to be almost perfect. So I tried it
too full of hope but was very disapointed. It's not bad, far from it, but
not worth that much money in my opinion.

That 14.99 is euros, not dollars.

Oh, no. For only text HW is overkill at any price!
