If you have 64 meg of RAM, install OS9.1. It will make your life simpler.

It takes about 5-10 minutes. I'm not sure of the details, but you remove
the keyboard and there is a little tray on the left hand side. You
remove two screws and very carefully lift it out. There is a very
fragile ribbon cable connect to the left had side of the drive.
I pry it off with a small screwdriver, but if you are not careful, you
can tear it that way.
The problems with replacing the drive are:
1. Depending upon which version of MacOS you are using, it may not recognize
a non Apple drive.
2. If the drive is bigger than 8000 megabytes (8 gig by Apple terms),
it will not boot unless you make the first partition less than 8000
megabytes and boot from it.
3. If the drive is too fast, it may corrupt data while it is being read.
MacOS 8.6 seems to not have this problem, I don't know if 9.1 will
on a 1400. My 1400s have Apple drives in them.

What I would do is setup two locations in "Location Manager"
One for each network setup, and then it is a simple thing
to switch between the two different "Locations"......

I always wondered what Location Manager was for -- never
looked at it. Thanks, Bruce : )
