my (about two year old) battery for my PBG3 Pismo goes from 100% to 70%
and then drops to 0%! It charges normally from 0% to 100% in a linear
fashion. Any ideas about the drop?

If, in fact, your battery (not just the charge indicator) is short-lived,
you've reached the end of the battery's life. When one cell within the
battery decides it's time to go, it's "sayanara" for the entire battery.
