I have a 17' powerbook that has a terrible display. No vertical lines
just colors so off that they don't make sense. For example if I was
watching a DVD the flesh tones would have this weird green in the
shadows. Someone told me it was electromagnetic interference. Sometimes
it would be ok and then it would flash back to weird. Now it seems to
be permanently weird colors, sort of pixelated, posterized looking.
It used to go away when I held the computer just right, or I squeezed
the case, but I can't seem to make it look normal.
I am not a computer geek so please reply very specifically. I use the
computer like people use the phone (I usually don't care how it works,
just that it works.) I can follow instructions very well, though. So,
if you are detailed I can probably fix it.
I use my computer for graphic design (my daytime job) and watching
DVD's, email and photography. So this is becoming very annoying and
forcing me to fire up my big monster G3 to see any colors accurately.
Thanks,
elfie

Something like this happened to my display on my older 15" TiBook.
It turned out to be a hardware problem and the entire screen was
replaced under warranty (about 2 months before it ran out!). The
fact that your problem went away when you squeezed the case makes
it more likely that it is a hardware problem.
My symptoms where lots of purple - even at boot-up time.
This is not good news as new screens are not cheap. I'm typing this
on my TiBook and with the new screen it looks fine!
Cheers,
DeF.

I'll second the hardware problem diagnosis. Is the thing under warranty?
If so, call Apple and get it taken care of. If not, do you have it
insured? If it's insured, talk to your agent about the ramifications of
making a claim. Depending upon your insurance and situation, it might
make sense to make a claim on it.
