Using two iPods on my Macbook

I apologise if this question is a basic one but I have only been a Mac
user (Macbook) for three days..

I have a 60GB iPod photo and at the same time as buying my Macbook
bought a 60GB iPod video. I would like to use the iPod photo as an
external hard drive/image tank (I have the iPod digital camera
attachment) to store images from my 20D. I would also like to use it as
a general purpose external drive.

Is it possible to use two ipods on the same machine in this way?

Many thanks

Gary

Sure can - you can have as many ipods as you associated with one computer.
If you don't want to have music on them set that ipods preference in itunes
to manually update (as well as enabling disk use).  For hard drive use the
pod will just appear as a HD in the finder on your mac.

Hi Nigel

Thank you for your reply, I'll give it a go when I get home. I was
contemplating buying a 2.5" external hard drive but i guess this will
save me some money. Are there any pitfalls using an iPod in this way
(i.e. speed?). Can I, for example, install applications to the ipod
when it is mounted in this way?

Thanks again,

Gary

you can use the ipod as a regular hard drive, however, it is slower
than a 2.5" drive and *much* slower than a 3.5" drive.  the ipod is
also more expensive for the same amount of disk space compared to a
2.5" or 3.5" drive.

So, would you say that the iPod would be OK for storing images in the
field, but for desktop applications I would be better off with a 2.5"
or 3.5" drive?

Yes I would agree - if your intention is to run applications off the
external HD.  Haven't tried it myself but its great for storage.  I back up
my data every day on my 40G ipod using silverkeeper - works like a charm.

You may download 'iPod 2 iPod' for a trial. It can convert video files
between two iPods.
Here is the download link

I hope it helps
