Just Installed Norton Utilities. When I run Disc Doctor ( SystemWorks
for Macintosh.
Version 7.0.3r006) or any of the other utilities, my HD doesn't show up
in the opening window. Currently running Tiger. What to do?

Pack Norton up, and throw it in the trash. It can *destroy* an OS X
volume, particularly one with Tiger installed.
It's rare that you'll need a disk utility like that, other than Apple's
own. If you do (and you're not running an Intel Mac), you can't do
better than Alsoft's DiskWarrior:

Thank all the fates. Otherwise, it would have destroyed your disk.

Remove NU BEFORE it finds your HD !!
dlass51@hotmail.com - 26 Jul 2006 04:13 GMT
My system manager has insisted that I keep NU on my Powerbook at least,
he says, in order to protect the Windows machines on the network. (At
least he acknowledges that OSX probably doesn't really need it!) I keep
telling him that the "word on the street" is that NU is a pox on OSX,
and he keeps saying that kind of info isn't verifiable and or
trustworthy. Is there a reputable (no, I'm not implying that you guys
aren't reputable, but you know what I mean) reference that I can direct
him to in order to convince him? Or at least a place in which Mac
complaints about NU are distilled and collected? Perhaps a review
article in a mainstream journal?

Norton Utilities isn't an antivirus package, so it's not going to
protect the Windows machines from *anything*. As I wrote earlier, it's
a very, very dangerous tool to use on any OSX machine. It can trash
your file system in very short order.
The antivirus portion of Systemworks (which you mentioned you had) is a
little bit of a different story; I'll get into that in a moment.

Would the fact that the product has been *discontinued* have any sway
with him? Here's an article from MacWorld, in 2004:
http://www.macworld.com/news/2004/04/14/symantec/?lsrc=mcrss-0404
"Symantec Inc. on Wednesday confirmed plans to discontinue the Macintosh
versions of its Norton Utilities and SystemWorks packages and instead
will focus its efforts on developing its Internet security software."
So there you go. Norton Utilities is dead, and that's fine. Norton
Antivirus is still alive, but its only real job right now is to catch
Windows viruses. If you're going to run it, it's not going to hurt
anything (aside from your system's speed and stability), but you really
need the current version, which is version 10. The version included
with your Systemworks is more than a little outdated.
Another option is ClamXAV, which is built on top of the open-source
ClamAV virus scanner:
http://www.markallan.co.uk/clamXav/
And a review of it in MacWorld:
http://www.macworld.com/2006/05/reviews/clamxav103/index.php
Hope that helps.

Excellent. Thanks much.

and more about Norton from another list:

Nope. And of course now they've given up entirely and discontinued
utilities.
> Can you be more specific?
Yes. Specifically, the root-level files Norton installs -- "Filesaver"
and a bunch of daemons to control it -- cause more problems than they
fix. Ditto the virus protection, etc.
Also, their directory repair is poor and destroys data other utility
programs need. DiskWarrior even has a message that says something along
the lines of "We cannot repair this directory -- some other program
(Norton) has tampered with the directory structure."

My advice would be uninstall Utilities. The Mac OSX seems to do an
excellent job at defragging. Next you'll need to scroll thru all your
OSX folders on the HDD to see where Norton has placed little buggy
things. In the UK they call Norton 'Cinzano' (once it's on the table
it's impossible to get it off again).
It's far more trouble than it's worth.

OK. Norton's in the trash. I'm working with DiskWarrior now.
However, when I boot from the CD and dry to rebuild the HD, it stalls
out at step 5. Several attempts and same results.
Suggestions?

Wait. Some of these steps can take hours.
