When will the new iPod/Handheld Macs with built-in keyboards and touch
screens come out?

Or the touch screen MacBook Pros?

'indiana' is a 'nolnn' and 'hoosier' is a 'solkk'. Indiana doesn't solkk.

Yeah .. about the time Steve Jobs decides he needs a loss leader :)

I gotta tell ya, as the owner of a Windows Mobile 5 PDA, I'd dump it in
a minute for one with an Apple OS.

To Microsoft, version 5 seems to be about a first beta version. It
frequently locks up to the point I have to manually reset it, the user
interface was given NO thought whatsoever, yada yada yada.

I had a conversation with one of my sons that went something like this:
What if you're in the living room and you want a glass of milk? You go
to the kitchen, and open up the refrigerator.  What if you were in your
BEDROOM and you wanted a glass of milk, and you went to the kitchen and
found that the refrigerator is now in the BATHROOM? And if you were
coming in from OUTSIDE, the refrigerator is now in the DINING ROOM?
That's the WM5 experience.  WOULD SOMEBODY PLEASE LET ME ACCESS MY
CONTACTS FROM THE SAME PLACE IN EVERY PROGRAM? For something that I'd
like to be able to use quickly and efficiently, I YEARN for a design
that was meant for its users to actually USE.  Apple could give me that.
Unfortunately the ROKR may have set that effort back quite a ways...

That has never seemed a market Apple has been excited by (unless
you count the ill-fated Newton).  They seem to prefer creating
markets vs. following in Microsoft's footsteps and cleaning up the
mess.

As to PDAs I've always prefered the Palm OS variety to those
running Win CE and its ilk.

And yet.... that's more or less what they did with the iPod.  It wasn't
MS that time, but aside from that it's an accurate description.

Really?  I think the iPod really created the market.  There were
MP3 players before the iPod, but nothing really like the iPod.
The iPod really followed in no one's footsteps.

I expect if Apple ever comes out with a handheld computer again, you'll
say the same thing about it after it's launched.  I remember the iPod
launch, and how unimpressed I was at Apple entering a crowded field.  I
already had a portable MP3 player that held more tunes than the original
iPod.  Apple didn't create the market, not hardly, but they did run away
with it once they jumped in.

Am I reading this thread correctly...if I move from Windows to a Mac, my
Pocket PC won't sync but a Palm will?

Since you wrote that in response to one of my messages, I guess I should
respond.  I don't know where in that discussion there was any mention of
whether mobile Windows devices could sync to Macs, the discussion was on
an entirely different subject.  Nevertheless if you want to do this,
check out <http://www.markspace.com/>.

Not with the software that comes with either the PocketPC machine or
the Mac. However, PocketMacPC works pretty well.

This is a good argument for Apple opening up Mac OS X licensing to at
least OEMs or VARs for machines which do _not_ compete with / have an
analogue in Apple's computer lineup.

This would allow someone like Motion to sell their Tablet PC w/ Mac OS
X, but would preclude say Dell undercutting the professional tower
systems.
