If you check the specs... you'll notice that that lovely
black case adds $150 to the price (and is only available in
the $1499 MacBook at this point.)

This way, they get to see what the demand for a black MackBook really
is; if it's not there, they have lots of wiggle room to drop the price.

I want one; I mean I really, really do want one - the 15" Macbook Pro,
to be specific.
If I get it, this will be my first Mac, after very many years and very,
very many p.c.s.
But, I need to ask,
How long has it taken Apple to work out design and manufacturing defects
in previous new models?
I ask because I am not encouraged by the number of complaints I've seen
coming from long-time Mac owners, of numerous niggling defects in some
of the units already owned - distracting noises from the cpu and from
the screen lamp, visual screen artifacts, mechanical glitches (e.g. the
magnetic power connector seems defectively designed), etc., such that I
would find hard to accept, since I am not (yet) a Mac True Believer, and
therefore not ready to overlook small annoyances in a luxury item,
Thanks for any perspective you have to offer a newcomer who expects a lot.

If it is possible to generalize, what has been typical?
3 months? 6? a year? ...for b? ...for c?

iMac Rev A: Aug 98
iMac Rev B: Oct 98
iMac Rev C: Jan 99
iMac Rev D: Apr 99
Pretty rapid for the iMacs, but I suppose the manufacturing processes 7
years ago may have been different.

Are there good descriptions of the various ports? I can't read
the writing on Apple's pictures. What is that dot on the front
right??

That's kind of what I suspected, but I find it strange
that there's no mention of an infra-red port on the specs
page.

As the owner of a G4 12" powerbook, I have to say that this looks _very_
attractive. I'm particularly pleased about the external video support,
which has been among the most important factors in always choosing the
powerbook over the ibooks.

I'm planning on getting two in a bit. One replaces my 12" PB (which goes
to daughter #2), the other to my wife, replacing her TiBook.
A workmate just swapped his 12" PB for one, and at the office, it looks
just fine, and the lighting there is a *lot* worse in terms of glare
than where I'd be using the machine at home.
