I bought an Apple ibook G4 one year ago for traveling use. I use dial
up modem at home for the internet connection. I did have the airport
extreme card installed to my ibook G4. What else do I need to do in
order to use my ibook G4 wirelessley when I TRAVEL? In the National
Airport, when I turned on my airport card for signal, it showed only
the airport's information homepage. When I landed at another airport in
another city, my ibook G4 can simply display this airport's information
page. I was not able to surf the internet with my airport extrem card
on while waiting for another flight. My friend uses DSL service at home
and with her Dell llabtop, when traveling, she can use free internet in
the hotel, airport, etc. I don't know anyone else familiar with Mac. I
hope the group can give me some advice. Thanks.

Are you sure those airports actually have wireless internet access?
It's becoming common for such access to be available, but there's no
guarantee-- you need to check on the specific airport.

If you can see the airport's info page, then your wireless stuff is
working and there is a 'hot-spot'.
Most of the time, they sit there waiting for you to send them
outrageous quantities of money. There are services that supply long
term access to 'public' access points, usually for astronomically lousy
value for money.

Spring-
It depends on the airport and the hotel, etc. Keep trying!
Some airports, coffee shops, bookstores have a subscription service. If
you travel a lot, it might pay you to subscribe to one of the more common
services.
I saw a note about a wireless hotspot in the window of a local UPS Package
Mailing store. It turned out to require the subscription, but allowed
access at many different places. If you have such a store, check it out.
There are also web sites dedicated to hotspots that are free. Do a search
for "wireless hotspots", "war chalking" or "war driving" and see what you
find. One I found was
http://www.wi-fihotspotlist.com/browse/ which includes subscription sites.
Another was
http://www.wififreespot.com/ This one is restricted to the U.S., but has
airport information at
http://www.wififreespot.com/airport.html.

If you want a simple bit of software to check on "hot spots" try
MacStumbler or iStumbler. I have the former and its freeware.

The directions on how to get wireless access at those airports are
probably on the information pages that you saw. If you're in that
situation again, try reading the page or asking at the airport's
information desk for assistance.
