U may want to check for latest security fix (for OS 10.3.9 anyway).
Had nasty lockup preventing restart or shutdown, until downloaded apple
fix and pulled out battery...

Could you elaborate? I don't understand how you installed the security
fix if the computer was locked up. Are you certain that the security
fix cured the lockup problem or could it have been something unrelated?

Can't prove anything, but if you have same symptoms of most system
functions not responding (like the off/on button or sys preferences or
various things don't display properly right from bootup)...

Well, this has been the only time I have had to go back into the Wintel
mode of desperate farfetched trial and error.  Maybe pulling out the
battery would have allowed a normal reboot anyway.  But weirdly the
internet and apple update check still worked, so noticed and grabbed
recent security fix, and with no functioning way to reboot had to yank
all means of power first.

My point was not where to pin the blame, but a way to recover that may
be unfamiliar to users of a normally troublefree system, and a heads up
on a security fix that is a good idea in any case.  It's not as if I
have an unusual or experimental setup here - just standard with hardly
any installations.

Oh no, had the pinwheel of death at bootup problem again.  If I am the
only victim, I wonder if it could be the battery contacts corroding in
our salty air.  That happens with some electronics here, and I guess
has been happening with this Mac only on rare usages without the
powercord.  If plausable, is there a coating for helping that?
