I've got 3 ipods, all 20gb 4th gen, one was working and the other two
had cracked screens.

I thought that i would check the hard drives from the ipods with cracked

screens,  so i started swapping hard drives and neither worked and when
i
put the original back in it wouldn't work either.

Problem now is that it displays the apple, then displays the folder with

exlamation point, it goes back and forth between these 2 screens.

I've read all the instructions on apples web site about holding down the

buttons and such, they dont work. They do tell you how to fix your ipod
if you see one of those screens but they never say "if your ipod goes
back and forth between these twoscreens".

any suggestions?

Did you unplug the battery when you switched drives???  If you didn't
that's bad.  In any event, try unplugging it, wait about ten seconds
then plug it back in.  My daughter's iPod has had trouble and twice now
power cycling it has brought it back.
