One problem I've noticed is that the palm of my hand keeps touching the
keypad area, causing exactly what you've described. But the extra
window in Mail is something else...

You're positive you're not brushing the trackpad with your arm or thumb
by accident?
You might try going to System Preferences -> Keyboard and Mouse ->
Trackpad -> and check "Ignore Accidental Trackpad Input."
See if that helps. You might also want to reset the Power Manager
circuit, which also controls the trackpad. To do that:
1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
2. Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing and then
releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Do not press the
fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
3. Wait 5 seconds.
4. Press the Power button to restart the computer.
(Copied from http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449 which
explains more of what the PMU does.)
If neither of those helps, yeah, I'd take it back and see what they can
do for you. Good luck.

It might also be worth turning off "trackpad gestures". Some people
find them useful, but if you're accidentally triggering them, you'll
probably be better off without.
