Actually, two questions here. I just picked up a Western Digital
external 80GB USB drive at Costco. Haven't opened it yet, so
I can still return it without any problems if I'm not able to
use it as an external drive and boot from it.
Question 1
Do I *really* need OSX Server or can I install Oracle 10g on
10.3.9? If not, is there a previous version (e.g. 9i) that's
around that I can use?
Question 2
Can the iBook G4 use the OSX Server? I need to run Oracle database
and the only Mac operating system is Server, cannot run on just
OSX.
Question 3
Can I boot from the external USB drive? Once, in the distant past,
it was possible to boot from an external SCSI drive (e.g. Zip, etc)
I've done a search of comp.sys.mac.* for "oracle" and couldn't
find anything. I then searched google in general and found some
excellent sources (including step-by-step) but they are all for
10.4, and I'm running 10.3.9 and not ready for the upgrade right
now -- too many other things going on.
thanks

I am quite sure that you cannot boot from a USB drive. SCSI yes,
Firewire yes but USB no.
Fro that matter, not all external firewire drives are bootable. I got
one that was not (unknowingly) and emailed the company and they said
"no, that drive is not bootable". I emailed another comapany about
another external drive asking if it was bootable and they said yes, but
you have to use its firewire port, not its USB port if you want to boot
from it.

I have booted from a USB drive but only into OS 9. Same drive, same
computer and same systems on the disk and it wouldn't boot into OS X.

No. Google for this subject and you'll find information on how
to install the personal Oracle 10g on plain Mac OS X.

I have no idea if an iBook can use OS X Server, but I am sure you
can find that out by reviewing the system requirements on Apple's
web site.

I doubt you can boot from a USB disk drive. Even if you could, it would
be painfully slow. As for Oracle, I suggest you hold off on installing
it until you're ready to upgrade to Mac OS X 10.4.

Yes, you can run OS X Server on an iBook. Because our XServe doesn't
have video I started it up in FW Target Disk mode then used it as a boot
drive on my iBook G4. I used it to set it up using the iBook video,
keyboard and mouse.

I didn't see a personal Oracle on the download site. Did I
miss something simpler?
So far, didn't need any info other than what's supplied with the
Oracle install. Of course it took forever (10+ hours at night) to
download the Developer tools, then over 6 hours to install Oracle.
Haven't tried to use it yet. Installed the entire Enterprise 10g v2
set with no problems other than boredom.
