Souping up the seemingly unsoupable - iBook Clamshell

Hiya,
I'm new to this whole usenet malarky so I'm sorry if I do something I
shouldn't. Also, my knowledge of Apple Macs and Lap Tops is but limited
(I usually confine myself to a Desktop PC).

Anyway, one of my new years resolutions I set out to raise the cash for
a decent laptop computer. Well I had a browse around Dell, Toshiba,
Sony, Acer and usual crap PC World (UK store, not the magazine) try to
con you with (I appologies if mentioning those round these parts is
considered sacrelige). Then I had a quick look at Apple (not expecting
to see anything I liked), and came across the iBook. As with all large
things I consider buying, I checked it out on Wikipedia, when I came
across the original iBook (the 'iMac to go' version), and I instantly
fell in love with it.

Now I've searched through here and some other places, and it seems that
upgrading them past the 'Special Edition' 466 mhz Logic Board is out of
the question... Surely there must be some way past this? Running on the
idea... how hard is it to customize a motherboard/logic board to fit?
There must be one that sits within the footprint of the G3 Clamshell? I
surely cant have been the only tinkerer to consider doing something
like thise.... although having said that you hear less about the
unsuccessful attempts. The clamshell definately doesnt (by any stretch
of the imagination) seem to be the most tight-for-space laptop ever
made!

Running on the theme of me knowing sod all about Macs, how well would a
clam shell run on a 466 mhz Logic Board with the maximum ammount of RAM
(560mb is it?) and a fairly good HD (60-100gb)?

Anyway, thanks for reading all that, and feel free to shout at me for
sugesting such a ludicrous plan. All feedback appreciated!

Not really, other than upgrading the hard disk. And getting in and out
of the case to do it is...fiddly doesn't quite convey the task. Lots and
lots of fiddly little screws and bits.

More trouble than it's worth.

You can get service documentation for it from http://www.pbfixit.com, as
well as parts, etc. Reading the service docs first would be worth your
while.

Maximum supported memory is 320MB. It will run Mac OS X 10.3 reasonably
(one of my daughters has my old 466 SE), as long as you can deal with
800x600 display, and don't want to do anything particularly ambitious.
And the battery is likely due for replacement.

Entity Steve Hix uttered this profundity:

Steve is right, the 466 runs 10.3 surprisingly well. And there is sure to be
some obscure tweaks that speed it up even more. Possibly the same is true of
10.4, if you additionally disabled Dashboard.
If you just want to get to know OSX it could be a good investment, it will
be a collectors item after you eventually upgrade.
And don't forget, they make a good server since the GUI uses most of the
processor. You may need a new hard drive though.
Also noteworthy is the display, the older ones have an especially startling
depth to them. I have friends who love their old Clamshells for the LCD
alone!

Actually I've got a 300 Mhz tangerine clamshell iBook running Panther
with just 320MB of memory and it's doing quite well. You can't make
serious demands on it but it's doing a very nice job as a utility
server, phone answering machine, etc. Or if you really wanted to live in
retro-land you could just run it with Mac OS 9 (that's what it came
with, after all).

I don't quite see what this has to do with "a decent laptop computer",
though. m.

It has to do with a decent lap top that any lap top I got now would be
a let down in terms of looks. I know going by the box is a terrible
thing to do but the clamshell is pretty!

I think I may invest in a 466 laptop, and buy a donor 300/366 logic
board off eBay and play around with it. After all, if everything bodges
up then in the end I'll have only lost £30 or so!

Now to find a 466 iBook... easier said than done by the looks of it!

Actually, the max ram is really 576mb (64 built in + 512 stick), i have
a 366 indigo clamshell and it runs 10.4 very well (not speedy by any
means) but decent.  Good luck with your iBook, there are overclocking
guides for overclocking some of them ( i wouldn't see a need to
overclock the 466 version though).

FYI

the iBook Clamshell maxes out at 576MB however the SE has 128MB built
in and so maxes out at 640MB.
