For some reason my powerbook beeps whenever I type. It's not a system
beep, it sounds like it is coming from the hardware or something. It
only happens in dreamweaver but occasionaly happens in textedit.
Anyone have any ideas?

Do any of your programs have an option to make a noise when you're
typing...something "audible feedback when typing" or some such?

'indiana' is a 'nolnn' and 'hoosier' is a 'solkk'. Indiana doesn't solkk.

Do you happen to have the Universal Access sticky keys turned on with
"beep when modifier key is set"?  To check, launch System Preferences
and choose Universal Access, then the Keyboard tab.

I noticed the same on my PB 15" alu bought a week ago.

There is an imperceptible sound coming out of the two grids of the
speakers while typing in textedit - even if the system sound level
is set to 0 or muted.

Made some test in other applications. The beeps occurs only while
typing in textedit. Looked all over the system and textedit prefs to
find a hidden checkbox. Nothing. Not a single clue...

If anybody has any solution, it's mostly welcome. I stopped using
textedit for this reason.

I have this problem too with my powerbook 15" bought a month ago.
Good to know I am not the only one.
With my test, I think the problem occurs in all the applications that
uses NSTextView and not always depending on the text.
If i have a pharagraph that emits the sound in TextEdit, I copy the
text to
Xcode or SideNote or Stikies and it beeps the same when I type.
Really annonying.

Check the Universal Access Preference Pane and see if anything
suspicious is set.  I know I had a pet hit some key on the keyboard
which enabled some strange behaviors that were in the universal access
pane.  Perhaps these sounds are part of it.  Just my 2 cents.

took a quick look in System Prefs -> Universal access ->
Keyboard and...
found that : "Use click Key Sounds" (Tiger 10.4.4).

Went on apple's web site for more info :
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh1612.html

> 4. To hear a feedback sound each time the computer accepts a
> keystroke, select "Use click key sounds."

Will try to uncheck this setting and see what happens in a quiet
surrounding. Hope it'll help.

If you try this out, please post a feedback.

(sorry if this threads weird, I don't normally use Google for usenet)

I have the same problem with my Powerbook (I found this thread while
searching for a solution). I found that the problem disappears if I
disable L2 cache using the Processor preference pane, included with the
CHUD tools in the developer tools. I called Apple to report this, and
am sending the machine in for service, since it sounds to the tech and
I like there's a processor or processor cache problem.

In addition to the beeping, my CPU spikes almost up to 100% when I
scroll in any app, and there's a faint sound that accompanies scrolling
as well. If this sounds like your issue, and your machine is in
warranty, I do suggest you give Apple a call.

If you're interested, I can post an update once my Powerbook comes back
from service.

Have you tried plugging the PB into a different outlet, or borrowing a
different wall adapter?

Usually this sort of noise is caused by grounding issues, and is
specific to a particular circuit or location (and the above test is for
this condition), but it could be other, less obvious things.
