took a quick look in System Prefs -> Universal access ->
Keyboard and...
found that : "Use click Key Sounds" (Tiger 10.4.4).
Went on apple's web site for more info :

Will try to uncheck this setting and see what happens in a quiet
surrounding. Hope it'll help.
If you try this out, please post a feedback.

(sorry if this threads weird, I don't normally use Google for usenet)
I have the same problem with my Powerbook (I found this thread while
searching for a solution). I found that the problem disappears if I
disable L2 cache using the Processor preference pane, included with the
CHUD tools in the developer tools. I called Apple to report this, and
am sending the machine in for service, since it sounds to the tech and
I like there's a processor or processor cache problem.
In addition to the beeping, my CPU spikes almost up to 100% when I
scroll in any app, and there's a faint sound that accompanies scrolling
as well. If this sounds like your issue, and your machine is in
warranty, I do suggest you give Apple a call.
If you're interested, I can post an update once my Powerbook comes back
from service.
