Dead iBook?

Is this a dead iBook with no hope of resurrection?

I put it to sleep last night by closing the lid. When I opened it tonight, it
didn't wake. When I hit the
space bar, which usually wakes it if opening it does not, it didn't wake. I
pressed down on the
power button but the computer refuses to start up. The hard drive doesn't spin
up, nothing.

Any tips for getting this machine started, or has it died?

Have you tried unplugging it and disconnecting the battery?

Absolutely.

H.B.-

This happened to my new PowerBook soon after I bought it a few months
ago.  I ended up removing the battery, but found out later that it wasn't
necessary.

It has only happened twice that I can remember.  The second time I held
down the power button for several seconds.  Just pressing it momentarily
didn't work.

Holding down the button for five or ten seconds will turn it off when it
is in an un-responsive state.  As I recall, there is an indication when it
turns off.  Then you release the button, wait a few seconds and press it
momentarily.  It should start up normally.

I'm going to try a PMU reset by pressing the Shift-Control-Option-Power button,
waiting 5 seconds, then hitting the Power button to try to turn it on again.

If not I'm guessing something's dead, especially since the speakers cut in and
out and there are problems with the AirPort antenna on this model. So I'm
thinking there's something mechanical going on in the area of the speakers,
power button and Airport antenna connection.

To follow up -- a PMU reset did not help. Like Generalissimo Francisco Franco,
my iBook is still dead.

Is it even worth it to try to get this repaired, or should I just bite the
bullet and buy a new one?

(I should've bought AppleCare, but this machine itself was a replacement for a
"lemon" that Apple bought back and I never got the standard "you've had your
iBook for nearly one year and we'd like to offer you the opportunity to purchase
AppleCare" letter). If I get another one, you can be darn sure that AppleCare
will be part of the original purchase.

Sorry to hear this.

I guess whether or not it's worth it would be something for you to
decide, based on the age of this one and the price of a new one.

Note that you can sometimes (often?) purchase AppleCare from a reseller
more cheaply than you can directly from Apple (a fact that I've
forgotten to apply on at least one occasion...).

'indiana' is a 'nolnn' and 'hoosier' is a 'solkk'. Indiana doesn't solkk.
