Multifunction for Use w. Powerbook G4

I recently made the great switch, PC to Mac, and am mostly delighted by
my long delayed decision. As I work in a tiny home office, I've always
relied (in my PC days) on some sort of multifunction (fax, print, scan)
machine and currently have a Brother 4420C. Alas, it doesn't work as a
scanner for my Powerbook G4 (12") - I've checked the specs and it seems
that there is no way to configure it for the mac.

So... I am in the market for a similarly versatile 3-in-1 or 5-in1 unit
that does interface nicely with a Powerbook. Any strong recommendations?

Would the fax capability built into OS X suit your needs? If so, you
don't need so comprehensive a multifunction unit. I know that HP used to
make printer/scanners for the Mac, as an ex-roommate of mine had one. I
don't remember the model or anything, though. fwiw (and it's not much,
sorry).

'indiana' is a 'nolnn' and 'hoosier' is a 'solkk'. Indiana doesn't solkk.

This depends on your budget. Epson makes several all-in-one printers
that work with Mac OS X. I recently bought an Epson CX6600 and it works
great with Mac OS X. I am very happy with it, but I don't think it has
fax capability. Check http://tinyurl.com/34owu for information on
Epson's all-in-one printers. You might also check Brother and HP, both
of whom probably make some all-in-one printers that're Mac OS X
compatible.

If you are interested in a laser printer rather than ink jet, I
recommenda Brother MFC 7820N: it has scanner (including OCR), fax
(send, receive), and copier. Works via USB (which I'm currently using)
or via a network connection (working on setting that up). There is a
$50 rebate for the next couple of months.

The software for MacOS X 10.4 (claims 10.2 or higher) works fine (I'm
using a AlBook). Toner lasts for 2500 copies (or so they claim) and
replacements are ~$45. It has automatic document feed (very nice).

I ditched an ink jet, as the cost of the replacement cartriges was too
high. I now have photos printed by whichever local drug store has the
best offer.

I've long had good luck with Epson's line.  Since upgrading to Tiger, I
also got a new iMac G5 in-house that hosts my Epson Stylus Photo RX500.
I've found that I can print to it and scan from it via my PowerBook
G4/800 (older than your 12-inch model), which is wirelessly connected to
my home network.  No software installation was required on the PowerBook
side at all -- in fact, I never even bothered installing the Epson
software on the iMac.
