Fit and finish issue with new Powerbook G4 1.67 15"?

Hi. I just took delivery of a new Apple Powerbook G4 1.67GHz 15". I
bought it from the Apple Store Online. When the display is closed, the
left front corner of the lid is slightly higher than the right. If you
put your finger on the left corner and press down, you can wiggle the
lid and make the corners move up and down. The difference between
corners at rest is about 1mm. The wiggling is about 1mm up and down.

Is this normal, or a fit and finish issue?  Is the lid warped? Should I
send it back?

Thanks,
Roger Carlson

I have the same one 3 months now and it's exactly the same. I've also seen
other such complaints. I'd say it's normal.

Better to be too loose than too tight. My previous laptop was a TiBook that
was chronically too tight and the latch broke once and the LCD was damaged
because it was too tight. Apple learned a lesson from the TiBook design
which was defective, so this is a response to that.

If you don't like it you can get some sticky bumper pads at Radio Shack and
stick them on the lid inside on the top. Even a spot of spongy tape would
work.  That should alleviate the shifting around, which I admit is
disconcerting.

I received my new one, same as yours, with everything maxed out last
month. The fit is uniform all across the front. It sits on the little
tabs on each side.

I'd say it's normal. The same thing is evident on the 12" iBook G4. But
I must admit it is rather annoying to notice that there is that tiny
space-in-between.

Mine is slightly saucer shaped, with the two ends higher than the
centre.

Doesn't bother me...

Mine is the same.

I contemplated bending the top, and thankfully my intelligence got the
better of me. That'd be the best way to crack the LCD.

I suspect the LCD, the light and other stuff in the lid is just a tad too
tight for the available space.

I think I'll put some pads on the lid to prevent rocking in transit.

Contact Apple. That is not right.

I've had a g3 Ibook, then a g4 power book and now a g4 ibook. They all
were warped. The last two were warped on the bottom. Wouldn't sit flat
on a table. Not like a thinkpad. Does IBM still have a macos license?
Prob not for osx.

My new Powerbook G4 seems just fine -- not warped at all.   Yes, there
is a little play in the lid, which I'd never noticed until I saw this
thread, but when it's closed what gap there is is uniform on all four
sides.  I can see the point of the poster who noted that if it were any
tighter you might have trouble unlatching it.   As a new owner of a
laptop I've been very observant of the laptops my colleagues at work
have -- all Dells or HP's.  The industrial design of this Apple makes
those look like  pieces of junk!  I am very, very satisfied I decided
to spend the extra money and go for the Powerbook rather than the
iBook.  This is a solid piece of equipment -- and it has the best
keyboard of any keyboard I've ever used.
