iPod Shuffle resets itself whenever data copied to it.

I just got a 512mb shuffle and am having a heck of a time with it.  I'm
experienced with all sorts of hardware so I know something is faulty
somewhere. Here's the scenario.  I installed the updater off the disk
and iTunes from the latest download at apple.com.

Plug in ipod, light flashes green, light flashes amber/green, ipod
connects to usb and blinks amber, itunes loads, itunes brings up the
first dialog telling you the ipod name, i click next a couple times and
itunes tries to copy it's initial setup files to the ipod, ipod resets
and goes dark, then light flashes green, light flashes amber/green,
ipod connects, itunes notices, itunes brings up the first dialog... etc
etc etc.  over and over.

With itunes uninstalled I plug in the shuffle and it's recognized as a
USB drive. I can browse it no problem.  But trying to copy files to it
causes it to disconnect, reset, and connect again.  Occationally 2 or 3
files will copy before it resets but usually it's just 1.  So i can
move files to it one file at a time while watching it reset in between
but something tells me that's not how it's supposed to work :-)

Ipod updater works just fine.  it will restore no problem.  But the
updater doesn't copy anything to the shuffle and that seems to be the
trigger for mine to reset.

I've tried all 4 of the usb ports on the rear of my motherboard.  I
know some people have issues with front ports on some cases but that's
not the case here.  Battery indicator says it's all charged up.

Has anyone ever heard of this kind of problem and have some sort of
solution? Dead ipod?  all 4 of my usb ports are faulty (they work with
wireless network cards and wireless mice/keyboard)?  or something else?

any thoughts appreciated.
And if you know of a good ipod help forum i'd appreciate that too.

I don't have an answer to your main question, but I can help here.

Sounds like a bad connection, as in, the physical connection of the USB
plug is flaking out on you.  Like a light bulb that's not screwed in all
the way, and flickers if you walk across the floor.  I've seen similar
behavior, where the iPod would lose connection unless the owner pressed
lightly on the shuffle while it was plugged in.  That caused it to make
contact, but was annoying.

Given that the Mac in question had no trouble with any other USB
devices, I'm inclined to think that the shuffle's USB plug was just too
"loose".  You could try returning it.  You could also try crimping the
plug slightly with a pair of pliers.  Might fix it, but if you're not
careful, it might also destroy it, so do so at your own risk.

Where did you buy your Ipod shuffle? If you bought it from a store that
also sells Macs. Try bringing it back to the store and plug it into one
of the Macs, or try it on a friend's Mac. If the problem persists when
you plug it into a different Mac, you probably have a defective iPod
shuffle on your hands, so you'll need to return it for an exchange.
