I was backing up to DVD and opened a new spindle of disks.  The first
one worked okay but then I got seven consecutive hardware failures.
However, these always occurred at the end of the write.  This got me to
wondering if I have some defective DVDs or if my drive has failed.  I
think if it was the drive it would have failed early in the write, but I
don't know.  The error was always:

  Sense Key = HARDWARE ERROR
  Sense Code = 0x03

I tried writing a very small bit of data to a DVD.  Again, it seemed to
write okay but then it hung at "Writing Lead-out."  I left it in this
state for many minutes and then I aborted the job.  I am using Maxell
DVD-Rs and Roxio 5.2.3.

I am trying to decide whether I should buy some other DVDs to try.  Any
ideas?

I know the technology is different but I tried writing the same
directory to a CD and it worked perfectly.

Chances are, you have a batch of defective DVD media. Try writing to a
DVD from a different batch of discs.
