My 2003 iBook just lost its LCD, making it urgent
that I get an external display up and going on it.
What's the trick to this? I hooked up an Emachines
VGA monitor to it with no results. I gather there
is no key sequence to send video out as there is on
Windows laptops. The Mac help site just says "make
sure all the cables are secure", etc., and they are.
I hope it's not that the display hardware *beneath*
the LCD has died, but if it hasn't: does anyone have
a suggestion? I saw something about Powerbooks needing
USB keyboard & mouse plugged in before believing they
had an external display. Is this true for iBooks?
Thanks much for any suggestions.

first, check <http://www.apple.com/support/ibook/faq/> and see if it
qualifies for a repair.
as for using an external monitor, simply plug it into the ibook; there
is no key sequence - it should just work. there is no need for a usb
keyboard or mouse either. from your description, it sounds like the
motherboard has failed.

My suggestion would be to take out the hard drive and put it in another
Mac, or perhaps a bootable external enclosure, to access the data on
it.

I think what youre refering to would be that in order to use your ma
with the lid closed you have to have a keyboard, mouse, power adapter
and video out all. Now thats only when the lid is closed. If the to
is open just a video connection should get you going

It does qualify for the Apple extended repair program.
Thanks for the pointer; I guess there were enough of these that
some people threatened lawsuits, etc. the last year or so.
Mine's going into the shop tonight! Fortunately the display came
back long enough for me to get a good backup.
