iBook screen went dead

I have a 800Mhz iBook that I bought ~1.5 years ago.

My wife was surfing the web with it when the mouse dies, and then the screen
gets jiggly on the sides. Finally, the screen "faded" (as she says) and the
computer locked up.

She powered it down, powered it back up. It makes the startup gong, but the
screen is dead.

Beyond that I have no idea what's wrong. It seems to "go to sleep" if I shut
the cover (the white led heartbeat on the front works).

Any tips appreciated.

Joy...do you know if I can still mount the computer as an external drive so
I can back it up before sending it in?

Thx!

You may well be able to. I could when my iBook screen went belly up. I
could (faintly) see the Firewire mode icon dancing on my screen.

And I highly recommend a back-up. Apple reformated my hard drive!

I was able to take the iBook to a friend, and we were able to mount the
drive, recover the data, and burn a DVD. Now I need to give Apple a ring and
see where it goes from there.

Thanx for the help!
