Using iBook as PC -- with laptop closed

Hi all,

I'd like to run my iBook as a desktop computer with a monitor connected
and using USB keyboard and mouse -- but I have little desk space so I'd
like to maybe have the LCD display on iBook turned off and clam-shell
case closed.

Is this possible?  Essentially instead of using a docking station or
anything like that (if even one exists for ibook), I'd just turn on,
connect monitor and USB hub, and close the case.  Possible???

Thanks --

Sam

Well, it's *possible*, but you probably don't want to.  A lot of the
cooling for laptops comes from venting through the keyboard, so you run
a big chance of overheating if you leave it completely closed.

You're better off mirroring the display, then putting something small in
between the lid and the body, to keep a couple of inches air gap.

As long as an usb keyboard/mouse is plugged in, you can close the lid
and it'd work but I do NOT suggest you do that. The ibook is going to
get very hot and may even cook your LCD screen.

There are a couple of utilities that allow the ibook to run in clam shell:

Sleep3: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/20087&vid=108660

SleepLess: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/17893

While it should be OK to run it for short period's of time, it's not wise to
run it for extended periods. Officially clamshell is not supported by Apple,
so if you do try one of the 'patches' and anything happens to your ibook
your warranty will be void, so **use at your own risk**.

Apple support article:

iBook (Dual USB): Using Computer With Lid Closed
You should not close the display lid of an iBook (Dual USB) computer while
using an external keyboard and monitor.

You should not close the display lid of an iBook (Dual USB) computer while
using an external keyboard and monitor. The iBook (Dual USB) computer should
go to sleep when the display lid is closed. Under certain circumstances,
however, the iBook (Dual USB) may not enter sleep mode when the display lid
is closed.

You should not operate your iBook (Dual USB) computer with the lid closed.

The powerbook on the other hand does officially support clamshell mode. So
for extended use a PB is the best/safest route.

Cheers,
Rick
