I have looked through Apples web site but cannot find the definitive answer
I am looking for, so I will ask here.

I own a PowerBook G4.

I have the EnergySaver set to put the PowerBook to sleep after 1 hour while
powered by the power adapter. It never goes to sleep.

I have the EnergySaver set to put the PowerBook to sleep after 15 minutes
while powered by the Battery. It goes to sleep properly.

I can force the system into sleep by pressing the power button and choosing
sleep.

My question is, should my PowerBook not go to sleep even though it is
running on the power adapter?

Thanks, rtt

My iBook does, so I suspect the answer is Yes.

Thanks for the positive reply.

Now I guess I have to try and figure out what could be keeping it from going
to sleep.

Does anyone have any ideas on what kind of programs could prevent the
PowerBook from sleeping?

I don't use FAX software at all, I do have a USB Palm setup and a MacAlly
Trackball and I start up the Calendar application when I log in to set the
date on the ICON.

All ideas most welcome.

It may be simply corrupt preferences. The easiest way, I think, to
really check what your system is configured to do is to open a terminal
and "sudo pmset -g". The "sleep" line of the output will confirm that
you've got it set to an hour. I'd only start looking for interference
from other software after that.

Do you have any active comm connections?  I've had systems stay awake if
I had an active comm commention (like downloading a huge files that
would take longer than the go to sleep time limit).

Is your Powerbook acting as a file server for other systems which have
volumes mounted?

Nothing active. All applications shutdown, except calendar.
One firewire disk plugged in, but idle.
Even changed the screensaver to be a blank screen.
Will check with pmset.

Have you tried it without the FW disk connected? I think that my FW disk
prevented sleep on the power adapter, but it's been a long time since I
ran a sleep setting when on AC power and I don't have the disk with me
to check. FWIW

Problem finally solved.

The other day I started up Entourage and watched as it downloaded some
email. All of a sudden there was a message about an infected file from Virex
and then 6 email messages disappeared, never to be seen again. I don't know
if they were all infected or not.

So I decided that I would delete Virex, as I hate loosing email, and if it
was infected, it was with a PC virus and I can happily delete that crap upon
arrival.

Now that Virex is removed, the PowerBook G4 happily goes into sleep mode
while on battery or when plugged in.

So, Virex will prevent a Powerbook G4 from sleeping.
