Wallstreet hot-swap problems

Got a Wallstreet PB with a CD-R/RW and a Zip100 drive which USED TO BE
"hot-swappable".  Now, if I change drives, the PB locks up until I
replace the drive it had in the bay at last startup (or restart).

Everything else seems to work OK, and this isn't a major problem... but
it is a bit annoying, and more than a bit puzzling....

Any idea of what's up?

thanks

Nope.  You SHOULD dismount any mounted volumes before removing a drive,
though.  But that shouldn't cause a freeze, just a snarky message.

Where'd you get a CD-R/RW drive for a Wallstreet?  I never saw one for
it.

I've never seen new ones, ready to install.

They're pretty simple to make yourself. You have to open up your existing
CD-ROM "carrier" and transplant a new bare drive into it. About 6 screws, one
connector, and (if you're lucky) no soldering.

has lots of testimonials and instruction resources.

Please, no "Go Google this" replies. I wouldn't
ask a question here if I hadn't done that already.

Is the WallStreet CD-rom drive carrier an IDE type drive?
Can we replace out CD-Rom Drives with OEM DVD-R/RW Drives
like the one from Panasonic or Matsushita?

I would be very interested in that posibility.

I'm trying to do the same thing.

I think it's quite possible. Some guy has done it for a pismo. If you
can read french (at list images!) try this:

http://www.sterpin.net/dvd8pismo.htm
(with a Toshiba SD-R6472)

and also, for how to put the drive in the bay:

http://www.sterpin.net/superdrivepismo.htm
(but with slot-in...)

and:

http://www.sterpin.net/combop.htm
(for a combo)

I'm just looking for a cheap source for the drive...

Yes. See:

http://forums.xlr8yourmac.com/drivedb/search.drivedb.lasso

Choose your computer type form one of the lists, and "DVD/CDR" as the type of
drive and search. There are 4 reports in that data base of people upgrading
to DVD/CDR drives, one as recent as today (6/30/05).

Good luck,
