says that 640 MB is max. But I know that max memory is, partly, determined by
what size memory modules are available at the time the computer is released.
What is max possible memory?
Also, I see only 1 module slot in the instructions. Am I missing something?
Only 1 RAM expansion slot?
Thanks,

true.

if you can find a 1 meg module compatible with the ibook 500, it will
probably work. however, the largest i found was 512m (last week, in
fact). if one exists, i'd love to know....

only one slot in ibooks.

Yes, only one slot. There's also 128M soldered to the board.

There's nothing quite like the joy of first hearing an Alvin & the Chipmunks
cover of Pink Floyd's "The Final Cut." "Not Now John" is especially sublime.

Yes, 128MB is soldered to the logic board, and so when you put in a 512,
that's 640. The next size up would be a gig, and I don't know what
happens if you try that, sorry... m.

The 640 MB is a maximum for the iBook G3 500. The memory controller will
not address more than 512 MB in the expansion slot. A 1 GB SODIMM would
need to be made using 512 Mb DRAM chips, the controller does not work
with anything larger than 256 Mb DRAM.

OK, one 512 MB module it is.
Thanks to all!
