iBook Clamshell Resolutions

Hi-

I've got a Graphite iBook Clamshell 366MHz, with 310MB memory, 30GB
HDD and of course, the internal 12" screen.

By default, this screen is only capable of 800x600 resoltuion.  Is
there any way to hack the available resolutions in OS X (I'm going
to run 10.3) so that I can run 1024x768?  Or is there any other
hacks/mods to get this model to run at a higher resolution?  I love
it but 800x600 is kinda old-school.  All sorts of other laptops with
12" screens can run at least 1024x768, why can't the iBook?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks all!

Because the old clamshell iBooks don't come with screens that are
capable of doing 1024x768.  That's part of what made them cheap.

I suppose someone could come up with a way to convince the Mac to try to
cram 1024x768 into a screen that can only really handle 800x600, but
it'd be ugly with a capital "ug".

Unfortunately it is not possible. This is because the screen on your
iBook is made up of 800 rows of 600 pixels. Each of those pixels can
display a colour. If you look at your screen real close up you can
probably see that it is made up of lots of little squares. Because there
are only 800 by 600 squares, you cannot display any more than that.

I know that many 12" screens run at a higher resolution, but they are
generally either more modern, or were significantly more expensive when
your iBook was released.

Your best bet is to sell it on eBay and use the funds towards a new iBook.

The newest of the clamshell iBooks models is over 4 years old, 800x600
was a pretty normal LCD resolution then for a 12 inch display.  I guess
that is "old-school".  The next iBook model was introduced 4 years ago
next month in May, it came with a 1024x768 LCD display.  But it was not
a clamshell iBook.

No. An LCD panel has discrete, individual pixels. That's all you get,
although you can interpolate to display *lower* resolutions.

Because it is *older* than current laptops with 12" displays. It hasn't
got more than the 800x600 pixels that is displays.
