I'm beginning to come to the conclusion that the sound-in on my PB
doesn't work. I have the correct settings selected- Line In. When I
switch the microphone on/off, I see a brief surge in the Input level,
but I can't get any level after that. (Input volume is on MAX.) I have
tried different microphones which I know work fine. Is this a common
issue? I really can't be bothered trying to get this fixed, but I do
record onto the powerbook every now again. Could a USB or Firewire
microphone be an alternative. (My quickcam functions fine as a 'USB
Microphone.)

They are not kidding when they call it line-in. It is *not* mic-in.
You need a pre-amplifier.

For a check, try driving the line-in from a headphones out from your
amp or VCR or similar.

Once you have a good mic pre-amp sorted, you will be pleasantly
surprised with the quality of the PB's sound capture through line in.

OK- but I didn't with the lombard. It recorded very well just using the
line in.

I had sort of hoped that just connecting a mic would do the trick- it
makes things easier, which in a way is the point of the powerbook.

Still, at least it isn't a hardware issue then.
