The letters on the keyboard of my 6 month old ibook are wearing off!
Since I do not have particularly long nails, and do not strike the keys
hard at all...is this just a fluke or are others having this problem as
well? Had a previous ibook and never had this problem at all!

I've been using my iBook heavily for more than a year, no sign of
letters wearing off.

It's not an unusual problem, though of course not everyone is affected.
With a 6-month-old iBook you might see if Apple will replace it under
warranty.

This happened to my friend's iBook G4. All of her letters are wearing
off, and I know she has a rather light touch...

I too would have to say contact Apple.

Mine are going too, especially the N and S keys, on my roughly year-old
iBook. Funnily enough I do hit some of the keys with the nails side of
my fingers, but not those keys. I'm not hugely bothered by it though.

Probably normal skin oils causing the deterioration.  I've noticed the
newer iBooks aren't made as well as the G3 iBooks (the orig "iceBooks"),
the newer G4's aren't as rugged, and they don't look nearly as
impressive either.

Actually, the newer iBooks are a lot better. All of my friends who had
the last G3 "iceBooks" as you called them, had to get new computers due
to repetetive logic board failure, or due to video card failure.

The newer ones hold up a lot stronger, look better IMO, and perform better.
