Is Panther unkind to external USB drives?

I wonder if there's an issue with Panther and USB 2.0 external hard
drives.
I'm running a Targa Databox 250Gb attached to a Wallstreet and am
experiencing a lot of Happy Spinning Beachballs of Death, as well as
other nastiness.

All is well when I boot from OS 9. I've run every sort of diagnostic
tool (even Norton, God help us!) but nothing works. Any ideas?

Thanks

The beachball means that some application has not pulled events off of
its queue for "too long." I'm really not sure what too long is. It
shouldn't be an indication of Panther being unkind to external hard
drives of any sort.

However:
1) Panther on a Wall Street is not a supported configuration.
2) Wall Street models don't have USB, so I wonder about the adapter and
driver you're using to connect the drive.

Good grief! You can tell that this board is a beta. First they ask me
for a nickname they'll use instead of my email addy - then helpfully
publish the addy for the entire universe to see, and spam :(

Next I sign up with Hotmail, post a reply to you, Gregory, with a thank
you. I hit "send" and it disappears!

Anyway, to answer your questions. The magic of XPostFacto enables
Panther to purr merrily on my WS, no issues except the external drive
one.

The adapter is a USB 2.0 CardBus card, which lets me run all my other
peripherals without difficulty.

The driver is the Cypress USB Storage 1.4J. I know it's really for OS
10.2 but I searched in vain for a more Panther-compatible one. (Any
leads welcome.)

Thanks again for your help.

Well then, use a proper newsreader program like everyone else, instead
of Google Groups.

:-)

That's sort of academic now, isn't it? I don't use that addy any more.

Now, have you any ideas on that driver, Pete?

No, I'm afraid not. And I'm sorry if I offended you - I didn't mean to
though I see how it could be taken that way. It's just the way you said
"board" which suggested to me that you might be one of the majority of
Internet users who are unaware of Usenet and thought it was all Google
Groups. I didn't want them getting the credit when they are, as you say,
pretty sh.t. Clearly I was mistaken.

Cheers,

Hehe, no sweat, Pete. I'm not offended at all. It's simply that it's so
long since I visited the newsgroups that I'd forgotten there are such
things as newsreader programs.

LOL, I didn't actually use those words, but since you mention it, yes
they are!

But to return to HDs. It'd got to be a minor glitch. After all, my
other periphs are working just fine. The HD works too but there are
issues, such as the SBBOD, which doesn't appear all the time but often
enough to be very irritating.  One can't get rid of it without a
restart.

I'm convinced now more than ever that the driver is at fault. But where
on earth do I find a suitable one? I wish I knew....

Out of curiosity, have you tried it without any 3rd-party driver? I'm
not promising it will work; just wondering if you've given it a shot.

Yup, it's me again, reverting to my old email addy. Just delete the triple x
if you want to reply privately.

Thanks for that, Gregory. I reckon I've tried just about every 3rd-party
driver I could find when trawling the net! None works I'm afraid.

It's clearly a Panther/USB issue. The same thing happens when I use my USB
flash drive, and again no probs in OS 9.0.

Somebody somewhere suggesting swapping out some .kext files with Jaguar.
Well, I tried this but it messed up my installation. Clean install and back
to square one :(

A shame, really, coz the Wallstreet is as good as it was when it came out of
the box and it has the best little keyboard ever made!
