How do I set my iPod for manual transfer without it automatically transferring???

I have a 30 GB iPod that I use with a PC.  Several months ago, I loaded
it with a couple thousand MP3s and then dumped those MP3s onto CDs (as
data) so I wouldn't have to have all those MP3s on my hard drive.

Now I've added more (different) MP3s to my hard drive that I want to
add to my iPod.

Here's the problem: I know that the way to add those new tracks to my
iPod without removing all the files (from my iPod) that are no longer
in my iTunes Library is to set my iPod to "manual transfer."  But the
only way to do this seems to be to attach my iPod to my PC, which will
automatically start syncing the two at that moment (precisely what I
don't want, because it'll remove all the files currently on my iPod).

Is there a solution to this Catch-22??  Can I set up my iPod for manual
transfer without attaching it to the computer and losing everything??
HELP!!  (And thanks!)

Hi

Not sure it is actually going to work the way you want!!!!!!

There is an icon in iTunes bottom left of the window that you click (well on
a Mac anyway) to make the changes to Manual sync.

HOWEVER my understanding is that it will sync whatever you manually mark to
sync, anything that is not marked to sync, because it does not exist on you
computer will be removed.

I am 99% sure this is what will happen.

Sorry.

On a Mac there is a way to bypass the automatic update (in OS 10).
After iTunes is open, you connect the iPod and hold down the Command
and Option keys until the iPod appears in the iTunes lower panel.  Keep
holding for a few seconds.  Then you can switch to manual.

This may not work on a PC.  If you have a friend (with a PC iPod),
whose iTunes library is synched with the iPod, he might give the key
combo a try for you.

There really should be an easy way to turn off the automatic update
option.

But even if you turn of the auto-update I think that when you DO sync, that
any tunes you have not marked to sync, i.e. All the ones that the original
poster has removed from his computer, will be deleted by iTunes.

I don't think there is a way around this.

Thanks to both of you.  You've convinced me that I should tread very
carefully on this!  As such, I'm going to call Apple and see whether
they have a clear answer for me.  I can't believe there isn't an easier
way to do this!!

Best,
Josh

If the preference is set to manually update, can't you just drag and
drop a playlist from the iTunes column over to the iPod column?

I can't speak to playlists, but having successfully set my iPod to
manual (finally!), I was able to drag and drop songs directly onto the
iPod in the Source column.  Presumably, a playlist would transfer this
easily, too.
