iBook crashes after network switch

OK, here's what I did. My business has 3 new iBook G4s and I have been
configuring them. I'm fairly new to OSX (learning fast since November) so I
still do ignorant things sometimes.

I had iBook A plugged into an Ethernet hub in a particular port. I finished
what I was doing and removed iBook A. Then I plugged iBook B into the same
port on the same hub. No apparent problem. I'm thinking probably that iBook
B now took over the IP address that the DHCP server had originally assigned
to iBook A.

I put iBook A to sleep and took it to a different part of the office. I
plugged it into a different hub (still connected to the same DHCP server,
though) and woke it up. Spectacular crash! Code sprayed all over the
desktop, and iBook completely frozen.

I'm having another employee type the error message into a file (can't do a
screen shot since the 'Book is frozen, and may not turn up on crash log) in
case I decide to call Apple. But am I expecting too much from even these
smart machines? Was this a classic IP conflict?

Thanks for any hints,
Amanda

I don't think that's how it works, but I'm not an expert. My portables
acquire the IP they last had, if it is taken the other machine sends an
error message "IP address xx.xx.xx.xx. Is in use by "Gnarlodious-TiBook".
Maybe you should ask at comp.sys.mac.comm for more expertise.

The port you use on a hub or switch generally doesn't matter and it
doesn't matter if you change what is connected to it.  Some managed
switches can be configured to be particular about such things but they
have to be set up that way.

The DHCP server would probably not have given out the same IP address to
both machines as iBook A would still have "owned" it.  Even if the DHCP
lease had expired iBook A would know this and simply have requested an
address again.

I can't say what caused iBook A to whig out but odds are it was
something to do with the wake up process and may well have nothing to do
with the network.
