Subject: Reusing 15" Powerbook G4 LCD display ?
I have a
dropped-from-42"-above-the-hard-floor--while-the-screen-was-open,
but-hey-it-still-is-working-as-long-as-I-keep-it-open-on-my-desk...
Titanium G4 550...
It has an newly installed Superdrive (ironically),
a 20 gig HD, 512MB Ram and perfectly good LCD and bezel.
But one of the hinges is destroyed, the other
bent and the casing broken beyond repair.
It starts up, runs and as long as I don't try to
open or close the screen... works fine.
I bought a 12" Aluminum G4 and could potentially transplant/use the
Superdrive in it.
I could take out the HD and put that in an external 2.5" firewire case.
BUT...
Can I use the screen for anything?
It is perfect- with nary a dead pixel!
The frame around it is good too.
My new powerbook can supposedly drive a second monitor...
Can I have someone solder a connector and rig a stand for this otherwise
fine LCD?

How much do you want for it?
There are some instructions somewhere on the net for making a video
wallpaper unit out of that TiBook.
But what I would do with it is get some used parts on eBay and fix it up.

If it were me, I'd look into converting this Powerbook into a digital
picture frame. I've seen various schemes for this, and since they all
involve partial or total disassembly of the computer, the broken casing
would not be an issue. There are a couple of books describing how to do
this, and you could no doubt find descriptions and plans through Google.

eBay. A working screen can fetch a nice price from someone who is
doing his own repair work.
