boot up by3.5 external harddisk

how can i install os x and boot up successfully by using a external
3.5" harddisk?

1. Install OS X on the external hard disk with the installer CD.

2. Go to the Startup Disk preference pane and choose the external hard
disk.

3. Restart the computer.
