problems connecting external drive with Powerbook

Hi,

I bought an external hard drive enclosure with 250GB to use with my 12"
powerbook.  My case has both Firewire and USB2 connections.

When I first bought it, I would just plug it into my Powerbook (Firewire OR
USB), and it would connect without problems.

But lately, I have had problems connecting.  I would plug it in and nothing
would happen.  Sometimes the icon would show up after waiting a few minutes,
sometimes it would not even connect.  Sometimes I would unplug and plug it
back a few times for it to work.  Sometimes I would have to 'reboot' the
external drive.  This seems to happen with both the Firewire and USB cable.

Has anyone out there has any intermitent connection problems with external
drives like me?

If so what is the cause?  Is it because I bought a cheapo case? Any
solutions?

Thanks,

JS.

Two of us purchased Clearlight cases and Hitachi 2 1/2' drives. Mine
CL/H works via USB but not FW, on my TiPB.
The other CL/H works by FW but not USB on a new 1.4MHzPB.

The explanation was that it was a bus issue; get an external power
supply for the external drive. So I did. No difference. An exploration
in progress.

I just bought my third external drive and sometimes they just don't show
in the desktop or finder but I can usually find them with disk utility.

After that then I do the unhook, unplug, replug it in, connect and try
again dance.

So I'm not the only one with this problem then.  My 3.5inch external runs
off AC power directly (no choice at all), so that is not the issue.
Although I know this might be an issue for the smaller 2.5inch enclosures.

Is it formatted? Tried mounting it in a terminal? man mount

Sorry if this is a bum steer, I don't use my iBook much and am used to
Linux.

Hi Bud,

Have reformatted a couple of times (connected by USB). Have only had a
few forays into terminal...
AppleCentre is getting in another case to try; I think they don't really
beleive me.

just tried in Terminal, by USB (first) and  then FW. The 2 partitions
'untitled on the external Clearlight are seen via USB only.

cbrown03:~ chrisbrown$ mount

automount -nsl [409] on /Network (automounted)
automount -fstab [412] on /automount/Servers (automounted)
automount -static [412] on /automount/static (automounted)
/dev/disk1s10 on /Volumes/Untitled 1 (local, nodev, nosuid, journaled)
/dev/disk1s12 on /Volumes/Untitled 2 (local, nodev, nosuid, journaled)

Do you have any other FW devices?  If you do, and they don't work either,
then you've got a bad FW port on your PB.  If you do, and they do work, then
you've got a bad FW port on your external HD.

This data would be good to give to Apple - that would help convince them
that you have a broken FW port.

So you are saying its not intermittent but down for good?  I was going to
suggest a reboot to the computer but if it is happening on both computers
then it sounds like either the drive or the enclosure is bad. If its just
a matter of not connecting the first time every time then I would not
worry. I think that is normal. If it is not connecting at all, then that
is of course a problem.

It does not connect at all. It is the same for 3 tested drives. I have
extensively tested the matrix of alternatives; cable swaps... and
mirrored the tests on the other PB's
