Hi
I'm struggling with an old 5300 Powerbook that i'm trying to upgrade. I
loaded OS 8.0 OK, then tried to update to 8.1 - it hung and I had to
force restart.
Now I get "System Error 41" and it says "Restart with shift key down to
turn extensions off". Well, it turns extensions off OK but I still get
the same error message... and around we go again.
It wont boot from the OS8 Disk Tools floppy with
shift/option/return/cmd/ held - it just spits it out. Nor does it boot
from the original 8.0 CD with C key held - it just whirrs for a few secs
and then goes into the "Error 41" boot cycle.
A Norton 3.2 floppy is not recognised - "wrong system".
So i'm beaten. I think the trash finally beckons unless anyone can
suggest a (no/low cost) rescue option.
Thanks
JohnB

"An Error Type 41 occurs when a Macintosh cannot load the Finder
application in classic Mac OS. Recovering from an Error Type 41
requires that you replace the Finder application with a fresh copy."
Seems that you may need a bootable OS 8.5 CD to fix though
