pismo trackpad question: hardware, software?

This 400mhz Pismo is getting erratic: I can't always control where the
cursor moves, whether it moves at all. Sometimes it wants to select the
entire line I'm on, or all the lines to which I move above or below the
cursor.
I'm really talking more about the clicker, not the trackpad itself, I
think, and I suspect it's hardware, not software, although I wondered if
something like a new install of setiathome is taking over, as if the
machine is simply slow to respond..
Rebooting has helped a little, but rapping hard on the clicker seems
surer. Possible to install a new trackpad assembly if my only experience
is new RAM? Expensive to send out for replacement?

The trackpad clicker had been intermittent, then tonight it was gone
entirely, but later I could use a USB Microsoft mouse on it OK.  I wrote
a sentence here, unplugged the mouse and the clicker worked for a few
clicks, then quit again. Wrote the next sentence with the USB mouse
plugged in, removed it again, the trackpad is working again....wish it
would make up its mind.
I know its screwed up when I have text on the screen; it acts as if the
clicker is down and a moving finger on the trackpad starts selecting
text.
Any suggestions short of sending this machine out for repair?

I had a similar problem a little while ago on my Pismo and I ended up
replacing the top case which houses the trackpad assembly and never had any
problem since.

I find the part at PBParts for $129. Replacing it myself is somewhere
past my comfort level, so I may send the Pismo to AZ and have them
replace it. The hinge is getting a little loose; I might fix that as
well and perhaps the repair will then exceed the value of the machine.
That's OK; my wife wants a G4 iBook for Christmas; maybe by then the G5
iBooks will be ready and proven.

You can pick up a used top case on eBay for $10. With a torx T8, the
service manual and a little care & patience the job can be done in well
under an hour. The Pismo is very good to work with: no snipping or
gluing required.

If the actual clicker mechanism, rather than the button, is the problem,
then a new Power card might do the trick as it houses the clicker
component. Around $25 on eBay.

My recommendation is first to get the Torx and check the trackpad
connector is firmly seated.

I think it's a good idea to check the connector. Replacing the top case
requires to completely take the Pismo apart, including the screen. Granted,
the Pismo is easy to work but there is still a lot of screws and parts to
remove and then put back.
