Are the brick and mortar Apple Stores (say the one in
Indianapolis) able to configure powerbook systems in
house?  For instance if I want a 12" powerbook with
the 80GB drive (instead of 60GB), can will they swap
the drive, or are they required to place a special
order and wait for it to be shipped?  Thanks.

No personal experience, but I believe they can add memory and swap out
HDD in house.

Thanks for the replies.  I'm going to stop by
the store in Indy tomorrow evening and find out
what their in-store policy is.  I'll definitely
not buy the memory upgrade through apple, especially
since they are charging $700 for 1GB when places
like crucial are charging in the $300 range.

I'm at the Apple Store in Indy right now, and they
carry the 80GB drive that I was interested in.  So  I
placed my order for the 12" powerbook w/ 80GB online.

Adding memory yes, because it is a user installable option, they can do
that easily as well.  But they may charge you more than the factory
price.  For example, if the Powerbook model you are starting with has
all its memory slots filled, then they would have to remove a card to
put in your bigger card.  They will not credit you for the removed card.
They will hand it to you and charge you full price for the card they
added.  The factory would not have a smaller card to remove in the first
place, so you do not pay for the smaller card as well as the larger card.

Disks are not considered user installable, so I'm not sure.  You could
just call them.  They will answer questions like that over the phone.
However, if they say they can do it, they might also do the same as they
do for memory.  You buy the Powerbook as configured.  You buy an 80GB
disk.  They install the 80GB disk, and hand you the 60GB disk as a
parting gift :-)  Of course you could then by a USB/Firewire enclosure
for the 60GB and use it as a backup disk.

Give them a call.  After all, how the Apple store near me works, may be
slightly different from Indianapolis, and they could have changed their
policy since last November.

No "may" to it.  They *will* charge you more.  RAM is better purchased
from an online vendor, such as Crucial, if you are at all confident of
your ability to install it yourself.
